Rain sensing wipers

I noticed in the Infiniti FX that the rain sensors don't work as well as other cars that I have been in and am wondering if you guys have noticed the same thing and/or if you know about something I don't.

If you flick it down one notch so that it is set on interval wipers and then turn it to shortest distance (most sensitive), when the rain drops are very very small, then it registers the wipers pretty well and cleans the windshield, but if the rain drops are bigger, sometimes even when it's set to most sensitive turned (shortest internal), then there is a decent amount of the windshield that is covered before the wiper cleans it to the point that I sometimes need to turn the wiper on manually to wipe it off clean. Most of the time here in Michigan, the rain drops are bigger. My reasoning for this issue is because maybe it doesn't hit that one eye spot on the windshield as much, but I don't know. It's almost like the most sensitive setting should be the least sensitive setting! If I set it to least sensitive, then I'm basically blinded by rain drops and can't see at all before it gets wiped, so something doesn't seem right. But if the rain sensor portion is really only that one eye the size smaller than a penny then sure the whole windshield could be covered before a rain drop hits that spot! :mad.:

Now on my dads 2001 cadillac deville DTS, the rain sensing is awesome. It's like perfect....not too much not too little...you literally never need to worry about changing the sensitivity or anything and doesn't matter if very very small or very large rain drops, etc. it seems crazy how good it is almost like the whole windshield is a sensor (but I know that is not the case). Plus it's a 2001! So what is the deal here?

FYI, I remember reading a TSB something about if the area is not clean or something, but mine is very clean. And it works as I mentioned, but just doesn't seem well developed or programmed or something else I don't know. Before I had my windshield replaced i noticed this and then afterwards now with new windshield and replaced new rain sensor, same, so I'm wondering if there is anything else to look at maybe reset the sensitivity or something else or if you guys notice this too....if you notice it too a little then it must be for sure an Infiniti issue that I'm shocked about because to me it's useless 50% of the time.

Any info would be appreciated. Does it work well for you guys or have you noticed similar experiences when sometimes you need to manually turn it on to get something cleaned off? Or have any suggestions if they work awesome for you in all situations all the time?

Hmmm......mine work fine. But yeah sometimes I have to manually flick the wiper trigger to clean the rain off the window because the sensor camera on the windshield doesn't always pick up that there is rain on the windshield when it's little drops. But when there is bigger drops or the rain is coming down hard then it automatically wipes the windshield.

But you got to remember that we also have speed sensitive wipers in conjunction with the rain sensing wiper camera on the windshield. I noticed when your at a stop it wipes the windshield less, and when you start driving again it starts wiping it more and faster. You can adjust the sensitivity of the speed sensitive wipers on the comfort and conveniece settings on the navi menu.

But anyways it's just the design of the rain sensing wipers. Nothing much you can do about it. Sometimes if water is not directly in front of the little camera it won't pick it up so that's normal.

^^^ I just ran to the car and checked...I don't see anything about rain sensing or wipers in the Nav. I went to Nav settings comf/conv and only see headlights sensitivity among other things, but nothing relating to wipers.

Is it on some special diagnostic screen maybe that you are referring to? I didn't know I can change something in regards to wipers other than the intervals speed on the actual wiper arm and then up for manual quick and down to select internal or continuous.

In the cadillac I never ever had to turn it on manually...that's why it's a bit more frustrating....I'd like to turn everything on to the most sensitive and see what happens. I think the sensitivity needs to be increased somehow like you mentioned and that's all and then the interval reduced so that when it does rain hard, the wipers won't go crazy fast.

I thought we had that setting in the menu......hmmmm. I don't know what to say though. All I know is that the rain sensing wipers are designed like that. My cousin's 2011 QX56 has rain sensing wipers too it performs the same way.

Maybe you can ask the dealer to hook up the Consult III machine to program them to suit your needs more.

Next time you are in your FX, check out where you may have seen it because maybe you did and I just missed it.

For example, my all around cameras in the front right is off...then you posted about the diag screen and noticed a way to modify the camera angles to readjust so know that is fixable with just adjusting settings. :)

Just curious, anybody else have any comments regarding how they feel about the auto sensing wipers? You can control the internal, but what I actually need is change the sensitivity......seems like I auto be able to do that?

GEE35FX on here has them too. You could ask him.

Im going to go check on my navi menu though.

Ok I just went outside and looked and I don't see the setting for the wiper speed sensitivity. I got it confused with the auto headlight sensitivity.

The only way you can adjust it is as JD said by turning the sensitivity higher or lower on the wiper controls while it is in the intermittent position.
I do find mine work reasonably well.

Aaron, you might have got it mixed up with your speed sensitive volume control setting also.

We have so many techie features on this great ride, I am always rediscovering new ones

Hey guys,

I noticed something different (glitch I believe) on my rain sensing wipers. When they're turned on, and it's raining outside, they seem to be working fine. Here's the weird part:

Keeping the rain sensing wipers on, as I'm entering my garage (and of course no more rain in the garage), the wipers start wiping much faster to the point where I have to turn the wipers off! WTF?!

Have you guys had any issues with that?

I know we also have something called a speed sensitive wiper interval which is what I was talking about. It adjusts the wiper speed depending on how fast the car is going. Check it out in the manual.

Mine does that too. It's because you have to turn them off manually after your done with using it.

U don't have to turn off the wipers when u are done. Never ever did in the cadillac.

I'm frustrated. Today it's snowing and I have to frequently turn the wiper on more even when set to most sensitive :(

Well according to our Owners manual you are supposed to turn them off in our FX.
That might be so with the Caddy, they also have better seat heaters also, but, I have never had as much fun driving any Cadillac.

Hehe actually it's funny u said that. I was driving the cadillac DTS for about 1 week then sat inane drove on the FX and said oh my gosh what a HUGE MASSIVE difference. You get so used to driving it that u truly see how cheap other cars are. And yes true about seat warmers although I plan to change the seat filters and we'll see then plus no cooling seats in cadillac! ;)

Anyway, I think I'm going to take a video and show u guys next time.

If it's raining or snowing and u are stop and go for about 30 min, gee35 u don't feel inclined to change it to manual to do more wipes even on least interval?

Yes I do turn them onto manual sometimes. I have to do the same thing in my GMC Z71 Crew Cab, and it has rain sensing wipers. I drive a friends Cadillac DTS also along with his Cadillac SRX and they are such boring rides.

Weird

I didn't know that. Pretty weird though, that they start wiping really quickly when entering my garage. Thanks!

Mine don't seem to work at all... Either that or I end up getting frustrated cuz I can't see anything and end up turning it on manually, so it's either too fast or nothing until I wipe it myself. There should be a setting to override the system to adjust the intermittent wipers manually like on most cars I've seen with the rain sensing wipers

Interesting. I've never even considered using mine. I'm always setting the speed to my liking when it's raining out.

JD, I've got QUIETLY the same issue... My wipers work just the same as yours... I hate that thing... It is really useless with the big drops of rain... I asked my dealer to solve this problem, but after the research he told me that there is no way to adjust it. Even with the Nissan's service Consult program... So this issue is unsolvable, hope yet...
I'm a bit more happy now, because I'm not the only one who has such a problem)))

You have a 2008 FX which has no rain sensing wipers. Only the 2nd gen has it.
