G35 overheating only with AC on

Update

FIRST OFF I'd like to thank everyone in this thread!! If it wasnt for some of you telling me to give the fans direct voltage from the battery I would of never found out. It was indeed the cooling fans. I ordered aftermarket fans from RockAuto for $111. Great price considering OEM fans are $400. I went with aftermarket not only cause it was cheaper but Im sure the OEM fans would just eventually fail again so im sure the aftermarket fans will have better reliability. Plus they come with a lifetime warranty!!

Let me just say though replacing these fans was a nightmare. I had to remove so many things because of the tight space to get the fans out. I also had to drain the coolant which was a pain because if anyone is familiar with G35's you will know that bleeding the air bubbles out of the system is as hard as it gets. You have to keep lifting the car up on jacks and burping the air bubbles out of the air relief plug on the back of the engine. Took 3 hours to do! If not done properly the heat will not work and the car will automatically overheat.

But anyways I got everything done and the car no longer overheats with the AC on only like before. And both cooling fans kick on right away once the AC is turned on. Im very proud of myself because I saved a ton of money. The dealer wanted $900 in total to complete this job and I did it all for $111 plus the cost of the coolant.

Id also like to note that since I have the old fans out I spun then freely by hand and the fan that wasnt working make a slightly audible grinding noise where as the driverside fan that does work doesnt make the noise that much. Since the driverside fan did make the sound a little im sure that fan was almost on its last foot too and would eventually stop working. That's why I just bought both fans instead of just one for a piece of mind.

Thanks man!

See thats why I believe everyone should become supporters here on IS. Who cares what amount of money you give because the amount of info and knowledge on this website saves you money in the long run. Everyone here is just great and helpful whether its info on an FX or any other car

Thanks guys

One question. Is it bad that I reused the old coolant? I didnt have a new bottle on me so I reused the old. I do eventually plan on buying new coolant and draining and refilling it. The coolant I poured back in had some dirt particles in it so im not sure if that would do anything lol.

Thanks guys

using old fluid is fine if its still good but you should of filtered the particles.

Well done on the DIY Aaron! You definitely have the patience. Sounds like a heck of a task.

Good stuff. Glad we were leading u on the right track. U had me doubting myself for a little while.

Yes I know exactly what u mean with the coolant. I can get it done a little quicker now that I've done about 4 coolant flushes.

Thanks guys

You could have tried a coffee filter to remove those particulars - it should work well with almost all water based liquids with some patience. Do not plan to buy, just buy as soon as you can :)

Just a late note on the bad fan that did start turning when you gave it a shove = It most likely turned (slowly) because the operating fan was sucking air over it from the shroud area! If you put that "bad" fan in front of the "running fan" you would see the same result, the air flow from a fully operating fan is drawing enough air over it to make it turn! Kinda like the wind turns those giant wind generators!
