hey guys so i picked up a used set of fx headlights. im looking to customize it slowly when i got time. the thing that is stopping me is wiring... not sure how to wire it up without messing anything up so here goes.

option1
i want to put the stock fx projector where the dtrl is and make it hid by hacking the back of the headlight. is there a way to wire it up so both the hid projectors can be controlled together and turns on when it calls for them automatically? also can i get the leveling motor to work also?
Next thing i want to do is install halo lights. two white ones on the inner 2 headlights, then a red (if it complies with the law) or orange one on the turn signal one. These 3 halos would be used as dtrls.

getting these halos or extreme designs led ones

Option2
install stock projector in dtrl location but just use a dtrl led bulb so i dont gotta hack the back of the headlight. Then do the same thing as option1 but halos will be on with the dtrl.

what would i need to make this happen?

hmmm, I've had some experience in this area :)

to do a full blown inner projector that's going to work as well as the original does & truly double your light output, you will need way more depth than the headlight housing allows... what I did was chop up 2 headlight housings & use the part of the housing behind the projector grafted to anther housing in the dtrl area... this needs a lot more room too so I had to modify and chop up the radiator support quite a bit for this to fit... then reinforce what I cut out... not easy at all.

for pivoting what I did was attach the original projector to the new, making both essentially now one piece, then relocated the pivot & had the one motor adjust both up & down at the same time. not enough room to really have them both motorize individuality.

far as powering the second set that's the least of the problems... I was able to power 2 ballasts at each headlight from the original power feed no problem, never blew a fuse or had any other issues... hids don't draw that much power except on initial startup, they then trickle down to a low draw

here's a few pictures of 2 headlights grafted into one to get you started if you do decide to try this... can't find any installed pictures atm but these lights work amazing... this was not an easy job at all, many hours to get everything perfect...

Thats pretty much what i want to do!!! might just say f the movement on the dtrl one since i dont move it anyways. i need to find a "thrid" set of headlights since this will be a long project and dont wana mess up the ones on the fx.

if you want an easier way to get the look but not go all out, check out my custom headlight thread in turbocads corner... there I built some headlights that have this same overall look, but without the extended headlight housing & dual motorized projectors & stuff.. was trying to build a "budget" version of the above...

ill decide when i can find another set of cheap headlights/ inner reflectors :(

Nice post. Here is mine in progress of attempts to copy John's Quad Headlights:smile (2):

if you need a hand or any advice lmk bro, be glad to help if I can... for a second I thought that was a pic from my garage :tongue (2):

Hey turbocad, i got a question. so ive been planning and scooping out the winter headlight project and i concluded i wasnt gonna do it your way with hacking the headlight in the back because i didn't want to modify the engine bay for it to fit.

I plan on doing it your "cost effective" way. Modifing the projector to fit where the is (still figuring that out) without modifing the back of the headlight. The only issue is where do you suggest mounting the ballast? Im thinking of making a waterproof box and putting it in there. And also what about convenience of changing the hid bulb in the future since the dtrl socket is too small for the hid bulb to fit in.

Thanks

dude, even that is a pita... I winded up building an aluminum shroud around that whole area to contain the light and the heat from that hid bulb & make sure the light only went to the projector instead of lighting up the whole inside of the headlight which looks like crap., then the projector is also going to really blind people if you just leave the bulb behind the projector like that, so I also built a cut off shield, you gotta play around with positioning & aiming and stuff to get it right but then you can't get a nice even projection all over anyway because the bulb is just way too close & off center to the projector for a properly focused beam. you'll def have some playing around to do with it

I found that an aftermarket hid kit was the best way to light this, think it was a 9006 bulb fitment that worked out to be a good fit for this & fits the hole perfectly except for the actual twist lock, but you can either silicone or high temp aluminum tape it in. aftermarket ballast can be mounted below or behind the headlight somewhere, there's usually a bit of reach in the harness & there easy to mount

Custom Headlight wiring Help!

so ive been working on a dual headlight project like turbocads and the progress isnt too bad. I need help on some wiring...
Opinions are welcomed!
This is my plan and need help with a wiring diagram

Plan A
-putting 2 halos each headlight as DTRL.
-retrofitted fx projectors in for dual xenon in each headlight
-would like the highbeam shield to be fully functional

Plan A
-putting 3 halos each headlight as DTRL.
-retrofitted fx projectors in for dual xenon in each headlight
-would like the highbeam shield to be fully functional

Plan c
-Dtrl will be Hids
-would like the highbeam shield to be fully functional
Thanks!

I've been busy & haven't had much extra time but I'll help you out with this. what I need to know is not just what your connecting but how you want it to work? you want just the inner hids to come on as dtrl's? do you want a seperate control for the angel eye rings or do you just want them to come on with parking lights, or? if seperate what are you planning, a switch? give me details of how you want it to operate & I'll give you wiring suggestions

Thanks Turbocad!
Im still debating if i should put led halos or led strip in as DTRL so i dont burn out his bulbs left right and center. If so, id like the use the halos(or strip) as dtrl and dual hids for night. All gonna be controlled by the existing switchs

Option 2 is easier but burn bulbs faster? which is to use the inner hid for DTRL, then the stock hid comes on ( which will become dual) at night. ALl gonna be controlled by the stock headlight switch.

i know i'm indecisive. My first real mod on the fx :P

option 2 is more work because the dtrl circuit is probably not going to be adequate to start and run an HID, you would need to add a relay and some wiring to do that. on the other hand, if you just wire the dtrl to LEDs, that would be fine as-is and def the easiest way to do it. you could then run both hid's from the one factory headlight feed, should work no problem as it did in mine with 2 hids connected to it. also as far as the high beam shutter, again, just tap the second one into the first and it'll work fine as-is too.
