Hey everyone . I just got my car and the metal dash parts where looking a bit old so I ordered some 3m di-noc and went to work . This is not hard to do but it takes time to disassemble the parts and take it form me , you need a heat gun . Let me know what you guys think .

Now you're making this 35 your own! I also see you got a dash cover. As long as the engine is running great, just enjoy your ride and don't worry!:smile (2):
Now pop a cassette in the tape deck and ride.....
Welcome to:iS:!

I need to get more wrap to do the vents and door switches . I wasted so much wrap trying to cut out the P N D R from the shift lever . Will update soon.

any reason why you didn't go with the 4D stuff? Looks much more like real CF, has some gloss to it and doesn't look dull. Great job tho :good:

I wanted a flat finish not glossy . I saw bad reviews on the 4d coming up and bubbles when it gets hot. I actually wanted silver but it was too bright

oh I didn't read anything bad about the 4D. I actually wanted silver as well but didn't because it's too bright.

4D vinyl isn't any different to install than 3M. It has air channels which is what you need to prevent bubbles and it conforms with heat just fine. With any vinyl, if you leave air underneath, it will bubble up with heat as the air expands. And make sure you heat and reheat it a few times during initial install to set it. If you don't, it will potentially lift when it gets hot. Vinyl is manufactured flat, it's natural state is to be flat. You're using heat and force to wrap it over curves and it takes a few heat cycles to basically set it.

Last reports indicate that the 4D vinyl is not durable and won't last long, I would stay away from it for now.

Really? I haven't heard of this, do you have a link? I've only had my console wrapped since last summer and the car is almost never parked in the sun for long periods. I'm seeing the material being used to wrap roofs more lately. I'm considering having my 335i's roof re-wrapped from the Hexis CF into the 4D since it's much glossier.

You're saying you have the 4D stuff on the interior and it's holding up fine? I also didn't read anything bad about it that's why I was a little surprised the OP and now Zebra are saying it is

When you say "you need a heat gun" do you mean a high power gun from Home Depot or will a hair dryer work. Asking because I just got the 3m CF and primer in the mail and was going to start the wrapping of my console this weekend. But if I need a heat gun from the hardware store I might hold off.

By the way it looks great!

That's on the installer, it's not the vinyl. The first part that lifted is exactly what I'm talking about. If you don't heat/reheat the vinyl a few times, it will try to go back to it's flat form when it gets hot. Di-Noc can do it too, any vinyl can. The rest of it looks like the surface wasn't cleaned properly and that's why it lifted. Note that he was wrapping the textured plastic part, that part is harder to work with. It's slightly porous and vinyl is always harder to install on a porous surface. Plus it has to be cleaned much, much better than smooth plastic. I used to be in the dash kit business and of course those install with 3M tape. When parts were to be installed over that textured plastic, you'd literally have to use acetone to clean it and then use primer for a part to stick properly. And if Armor All was used on any of the parts, you pretty much have to use acetone to clean it and that goes for vinyl as well.

I'm more concerned that there are issues with the vinyl itself cracking or becoming fragile. Or if the surface finish becomes blemished in heat/UV.

I've seen similar complaints on standard CF vinyl like 3M.

Hair dryer works, heat gun makes it much easier and faster.

Yeah, my center console (navigation surround) is wrapped in 4D. It's holding up fine, you can find pics in my garage. Been through a few months of summer and high heat as well as winter. No lifting or bubbles yet.

You can use a hair dryer but it will take a bit longer to heat up . I got a Wagner heat gun from home depot for $25 and it works great . I added the link below . if you do get the gun leave it on low setting not hi . it will warm up in a second . Few notes before you start .

1. The clock trim holds the whole dash it you have to remove it first. put your hand on the left and right side and pry it up word. Also open up the cassette cover as it rubs up against it if its closed and wont allow you to take it out.
2. The clock trim is held with 2 screws take it out so you can wrap it .
3. For best result after you remove the middle console there are 4 screws holding the ash tray assembly in place and 4 screw holding the cup holder and 3 screws holding down the shifter . All these have to be removed .
4. if your wrapping the shifter take it from me and don't try to cut out the P R N D . I tried 4 times and wasted so much wrap . Plus under the Tach it shows you where your shifter is so I wouldn't worry about it.
5. the cup holder has to completely come apart and this is a pain . There are 4 plastic legs holding down the button and you will have 2 springs under the button and 1 that pushed against the cup holder lid.
6. cup holder lid was a paint to take out also as you had to remove the spring that keep it open . one screw on the left just holds the cover and the other holds down the cover , plastic locator , spring lock & spring . remove the screw . there is a round spring lock . once you take that off the plastic locator & spring will come out . to put It back together . Screw the side with no spring first . then close the lid and put in the spring , plastic loacator and spring lock . now using your hand or a small flat head push down on the plastic locator and turn it. keep turning it till it seats and with the other hand put the screw in . you have to do this in once shot. If the lid doesn't stay open then you have put it in backword try doing this again in the open position .
7. make sure you don't close the hole on the lid or it wont stay closed.

No link. Just random pro wrap shops were complaining that it won't stay intact on some exterior parts.
