2009-2012 FX35/FX50 Steering Column Comfort Adjustment Failure (Again)

Summary of ITB12039:

IF YOU CONFIRM: * The steering column comfort adjustment features (tilt and telescopic) stops working. * The vehicle is not subject to previous ITB09-014 NOTE: If vehicle is eligible subject to previous ITB09-014, this bulletin does not apply. ACTION: * Replace tilt and telescopic motors only. Do not replace the column assembly. Please see this bulletin for further detail.

Basically this was an issue before with the FX about the steering wheel comfort adjustment motor being made out of spec and failing and there was a TSB on it found here:

https://www.infinitiscene.com/searc...FX-Steering-Column-Comfort-Adjustment-Failure

However this TSB I just posted has nothing to do with the old TSB. Apparently the motors they replaced them with before can fail again. I had mine replaced before on the old ITB09-014 bulletin cause it just stopped working all of a sudden. Common issue on the 2nd gen's. Now there is a new TSB ITB12039 to replace the motors again cause they may fail again.

Had to get mine done under warranty because it stopped working :good:

How many times have you had it done?

I think mine applies to this new TSB. I had it replaced before through the old TSB because the telescoping function stopped working.

I just started to notice lately it's acting up. It moves sooo slow now to the point where the motor sounds like its going to stop working.

Me too and I am now out of warranty. I don't ever adjust my steering column so I don't know if the motor they installed is another faulty one. If it is, warranty or not if there is a bulletin out about it, I would assume they would replace the faulty motor they put in free of charge. I am going to set my comfort control to adjust now when I exit and enter to see if the motor goes out again.

I have the same problem since i bought the car (the car didn't have warranty so i tried to live with it). I was lucky because it broke at that point where i set my steering wheel so i can drive without any issues.
Anyway i was browsing the site (www.i-gear.ru) from where i got my fender flares and i found this (user GERO mentioned this earlier posts) > http://www.i-gear.ru/style/details/...nfiniti-qx70fx35fx37fx50fx30-qx50ex25ex35ex37

Description using google translate: To repair the steering column drive Infiniti FX35, FX37, FX50, FX30, EX25, EX35, EX37 when steering ceases to move forward / backward and up / down. ENG Steering Column Adjustment Comfort Failure - Often problem is. We make aluminum repair part (cogwheel) to solve this problem. you have to send broken cogwheel to us.
This is a fix for anyone who has his warranty expired.
I think it is worth looking at though i don't quite understand why you have to send them the plastic wheel. But i will discuss this with the seller.

I would think they want the worm drive shaft returned so they dont have to make a new one which would be fairly expensive to tool and manufacture? With the old shaft they only have to pull off the nylon gear and press on the new aluminum (steel?) one!

Seen that as well, that'll be my fix when I'm out of warranty.

Now is this often failing because of constant use of the steering up/down feature or just once in a while? Basically I'm trying to figure out why some people are on their 3rd warranty claim and others are still on the factory cogwheels...

When I bought my car I set the steering wheel tilt and position in/out once and that is the only time this failure prone part has been used. I am the only one who uses the car other than one of my sons but he leaves the steering wheel where it is which works for him as well. I wonder what type of person uses the automatic retract / tilt up feature every time they get in and out of their vehicle?

I'm that type of person. I would think most people use that feature.
That is one of the features I love. I always had the Auto Entry/Exit feature enabled on my 09 FX35 and now my 10FX50. I have never had a problem with it.

When I had my 1st gen, I used this feature on and off simply because it gave the feeling I was jumping into a stealth fighter get and the steering column/seat moving in was the canopy coming down ;)

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the plastic gear is molded onto the shaft of that entire piece. They probably need the entire piece so they can press fit the metal gear onto the shaft. I guess if its a simple press fit that anyone can do, you could probably just have the gear sent to you?

I know that some gears are heated up to high temps in order to press fit it on easily. Once it cools, the wheels slightly shrinks and I mean microns, taking better hold of the shaft.

Now without having that shaft/wheel in your steering column i'm not sure the column will sit probably/safely until your upgraded part comes in...

but definitely find out from the seller.
