VK45DE Knocking While In Gear

Try adding a little throttle while in "D" (Bring the engine RPM up to 1000 RPM or so). Make sure you have the parking brake on and your foot hard on the brake pedal and the person listening to the engine should stand to the side of the car!. If it gets louder (not just a higher frequency) I would say it is a rod bearing.

sounds like a little knocking..... throw some super high octane and some fuel cleaner (lucasoil?) and see what happens, it could be from a bad batch of gasoline

this happens on my dad's xk8 jag once, sounded like knocking. It was from "bad gas" (he thinks they gave him 87 instead of super)

unless you have real knocking...which may be a bigger issue.

Also check all of your fluids, etc.

Brought it to the dealer and just wasted my morning.

They of course didn't hear anything, they also said it could be from the aftermarket oil filter or the aftermarket exhaust... I basically told them, "I don't think so." I had this noise before my oil change and exhaust upgrade. At least it is documented, in case it gets worse. They also asked me if I wanted to do an oil change to see if that cures the noise and I told them, "nope." They also recommended that I stick with 5w-30 instead of 10w-30 ... I live in San Diego!!!

See if you can narrow down exactly where the noise is coming from I use a stethoscope but a long screwdriver with your ear to the handle while you move it around from spot to spot works too.

I use a 2x4 as a stethoscope. It works pretty well for what it is.

You know, now that you mention the oil filter thing I remember that I've had a noise vaguely similar to your mystery knock. I forgot to bring my K&N oil filter to the shop once for an oil change and had to roll with a Fram unit until I could get home to replace it myself. During that drive home is when I had the knock, and when I swapped the filters it went away. It wasn't exactly like your knock but it was certainly in the ball park, and only occured when stopped in D... Are you using a different brand of filter than you usually use?

Isolated the noise faintly above cylinder 7 when using a stethoscope. I have a new appointment with a different dealer tomorrow.

The circled area is where I placed the stethoscope.
