I doubt it's rust. Take a clay bar and you'll get it out. Otherwise if you are 100% sure it's rust (you can feel it raising the paint instead of just a small spec) then take it to the dealer as they cover rust for a 2011.

Thanks for all the responses! I tool another look at it, and it is definately bare metal with rust in it. Will the warranty cover it even though it could be a rock chip that hit that spot, took the paint off, and leaving it exposed to the elements? Thanks!

If its a rock chip off the paint, I highly doubt it would be cover under the warranty.

It would have to be a defect for them to cover it most likely. Weird place to get a rock chip though. Just got to clean and protect it. Maybe some touch up paint.

should I just touch it up with paint? or do I need to sand the rust out somehow first? how much would it cost to get it fixed professionally?

As a DIY point of view....i did this a few times with my previous car.
Use a Dremel tool with a small round diamond bit and dig out the small rust spot.
After clean it up and use a very small paint brush (like the ones you can by for model cars etc. Revel) and touch it up with some primer paint...looks like you have a black FX so use black primer.
Once that is dry, you can use a small piece of sponge (the finer material the better) and give it a small touch up with the OEM color paint.
I got it quite good the last few times, although you could still see it if you know where to look but it's better then let it rust and cheaper then going to a body shop to get it professionally done.

On the trunk? You mean the hatch? I thought that was fiberglass/plastic and not metal? Or are they metal on the 2nd gens.

The spot is pretty much 3 inches to the right of my license plate. I tried to take a picture of it but it's really small and the coat of wax on the car gave it too much of a mirror effect so i wasnt successful.

I would assume shadow is right about the hatch being a composite material as opposed to metal. Most likely it is just embedded debris that can be clay barred out.

Either way, let us know how it turns out.

Yeah when my whole car was repainted and I was looking at the hatch its not metal. Looks to be made of fiberglass or some stiff plastic

Fire, that definately makes me feel better about just painting over it and not having to worry about anything spreading.

These were the best pics I could get with my phone, the spot in the zoomed out pic is where the border of my shirt is on the right, in the license plate well. (Hard to see, just a tiny dot)

The dot looks white because there is some wax on it.

Don't stress too much, your over thinking this way more than you should. Its not like your entire hatch is going to rust and all the paint flake off.

You can do touch up paint, and then wax and seal the area with something like zaino. But truth be told if you just leave it I doubt it will spread. I can't say for sure obviously since I cant feel it and look at it first hand, but I see no reason for concern through what you are describing and the pictures.
