Steering and suspension problem...advices welcome :)

Hi guys:

I have been experiencing some weird noise coming out of my 03 FX35 (AWD - I believe that's the only model selling in Canada).

1. When I drive over bump or turn into parking lot through the ramp, sometimes I can hear a loud clicking sound from the front driver side wheel. The dealership was not able to figure out any problems within my warranty period. It is disappointing.

2. I have been experiencing knocking sound when I turn my steering wheel left or right during idle or low speed.

The dealership has not been helpful at all. Now after wasting the warranty period, I am bringing my car to my friend's garage to have him check it out.

Any advices are welcome :2smile:

Could this be your problem:

If this is on record that you complained about a noise coming from front suspension....show this this TSB. If the noise was on record while under warranty, the Dealer should help you out....emphasis on should, cause not all will.

That one sounds like a busted up pressure bearing plate at the top of strut. May be missing some metal ballz. $25- part, & pretty easy to get too, but you will not see it unless you do the dis-assembly. If you were out here I could tell you for sure by feeling it.

Just read that up above. Looks like that TSB is for a noise only when moving. If you're at a standstill, it might be my diagnosis.

Thx for the info toy4x.

The problem is that I used to go to that infiniti dealership and now it only does Nissan only. I don't think they will honor the repair under the warranty at all. The suspension noise was recorded during the warranty.

I have called the Canada Infiniti Headquarter and complaining about the build quality for my car (too many problems, failed radiator, noisy seat, starter problem, failure daylight sockets twices, muffler hanger rubber pieces problem, axis problems....etc) a week after my warranty period. And the customer support was really rude: (Me: "Is the car going to breaking down right after the warranty???" Customer Support: "That's why we provide the 4 year standard warranty. Your warranty just passed, there is nothing we can do" )

I guess now everything has to come out from my own pocket now.

Thx for the help guys. Do you guys think that if I brought the service record to from the nissan (former infiniti dealer) to other infiniti dealership, will they honor the repair even my warranty period has expired?

Bring the TSB into another Infinti dealer. Bring the records from your NIssan dealer and state that this used to be an Infiniti dealer.

If it shows on your records that there was a noise and they were unable to find it, what harm except your time, could it be to take it to another dealer? Shoot just try, worst case they say no and your back where you started. Who knows, you might get a good dealer and help you out, and I'm sure if they did....you will probably bring your car into the new dealer from then on... helping them out too.

Thx Toy4x. Those are words of gold :top:

Just for curiosity, since I have never driven the other fx. I just wonder that if anyone has experiencing knocking sound from the steering wheel? The other 96 Lexus LS400 at my house doesn't even have a single sound from the steering so I wonder it could be something wrong in my FX.

I can't seem to find this TSB in Infiniti help anymore. They seem to have moved the link in that site.

Does any one know if White hair got this fixed. I think I have this problem. It definately sounds like knocking under the front when I turn it hard at a stand still or slowly moving like in a parking lot or something.

try pushing down on your hood at the corner where it makes a sound. i had a loose bolt that made that sound.

I had the TSB fix done and it solved it, then it came back. It was actually my hood this time...

The TSB was done under warranty luckily, but I saw the bill and it was over $1,000 to fix if I paid out of pocket (they ended up replacing most of the suspension parts while trying to fix it -- no complaints here I got new struts out of it).

have same problem on my 03 FX35 , replace the 2 fender bolt but this did not help. replace inner and outer tie rod did not help , anyone know what wrong with it ?????? does a bad strut mount bearing makes the same noise on bumps ???????? pease help

No, a bad upper mount bearing will only sound when you turn your wheels. Where's the sound originating from, & when?

The problem should be popping or knocking from one of the front wheel when go over bump or entering ramp while turning. It's mostly like the bearing what Dave has said. I had my KYB strut and H&R installed over the weekend. One of the bearings was bad and it was the side where the noise came from.

You will only need to replace the bearing.

For the steering knocking, my buddy has identified the problems when the struts were being replaced. The problem is the coupler between the steering column and steering rack. When my buddy hold and turned that thing, the knocking sound appeared and the steering wheel were moving. You will have to replace coupler, and probably the steering column, which is what I will be doing next. sorry I forgot to take some pictures. The labor will be around 5 to 6 hours.
