Lately when i put the car in reverse the side view mirror makes a weird cranking noise when moving downwards. I'm going to the dealership for my scheduled maintenance but wanted to know before hand what the problem could be. If anyone has experienced this problem please explain. are both mirrors supposed to go downward when put in reverse. I never noticed it but since i have noticed the problem, only one of the mirrors move when in reverse.

only 1 mirror goes down. In order to pick the mirror that drops you can move the control nob for either mirror. (i.e. when you go to align your mirrors, the nob that switches from the left to the right)

^^^right on cheech, only one mirror works at a time, but mine is quiet.
I have mine set so neither tilts down, I prefer it that way.

No problems here either. Sounds like someone may of hit your mirror and damaged it.

I had it :-) My gears were messed up as someone touched mirror and folded it by hand.
Dealer fixed fast,30 minutes and was like new
I've had the same thing happen to me. I didn't go to the Dealer though, I just cycled the motor open and shut a few times and it quieted down and ran smooth again.

I'm having the same crank noise as i have the passenger side mirror tilt down (helps me from curb rashing.) But when the mirror tilts down it makes a loud cranking noise. Anyone have experience with this?

Mine was having this problem for a while. Last time I was in for service they ordered me a passenger side mirror without even me complaining. I got a call 2 weeks later saying my new mirror is in asking me when I can come in for them to swap it out. Haven't had any noises since.

Mine has the same issue. I'll get it taken are of during my next service. Sounds like the motor needs greased because it doesn't make the sound when it's raining outside.

Not sure whether this is a related problem or if it belongs in a different thread, but my driver side mirror has a lot of play in it and actually moves forward and back about 1/4" while driving. Could this be due to the same issue?

There is a little cover on the bottom of the mirror. Pop it off and tighten the 3 screws underneathe. We all had that problem and it fixes it. The mirror just needs tightened up.

seems like after the first initial tightening a few years back, I have not had any problems...seems like just a factory install not tight enough.

This is the right angled screw driver I used to tighten the three screws along with the internal type lock waser I added to each screw.
I didn't use Lok-Tite as the screw threads are very coarse (like those on a sheet metal screw) which don't work well with thread locking compound. IMHO this mounting arrangment should have had lock washers designed into it.

This the underside of the mirror pedestal mount with the cover removed. The three Phillips head screws can been seen here. They are #2 Phillips type. The courtesy/puddel light is hanging by it's harness after it was snapped out of the cover.

This is the pry tool I used to pop the screw cover off of the bottom of the mirror housing. It's actually an accesory tool for my chain saw. Insert the small protrusion into the small rectangle hole, located on the end of the cover closest to the car body and pry away from the car. The cover pops easily off.

Here the pry tool is inserted into the small rectangle hole just prior to poping the cover off. I have a white paper towel over the car door just under the mirror so as not to scratch the door when moving the tool. The Curtesy/puddle light on the bottom of the mirror is on because the door is open at this time.

This is the cover after it has been poped off the mirror housing and the light has been removed from it.
The small retangle hole is evident on the end of the cover.

I apologize in advance for the dumb questions but I can't for the life of me figure out how to remove the screw cover pictured above. I understand which hole I need to pry open, but I tried a small allen wrench (as mentioned in the other mirror thread) with no luck. I also tried to make a tool out of a plastic putty knife but didn't have any luck with that either. So, does anyone have any suggestions?

I'm leery of poking around any more with a small allen wrench without knowing exactly what I'm doing because I'm just going to wind up denting up the soft plastic that forms the inside edges of the hole and killing any possibility of getting leverage.

Also, when you say "pry away from the car," do you mean to pull the end of the lever that's sticking out of the hole away from the car (thus pushing the part inside the hole toward the car) or the other way around?

I can always take the car to the dealer since it's still under warranty but I'd rather just fix it myself since it seems so easy and since the dealer will likely want to replace the mirrors which will only work until the new mirrors manage to also loosen up.

TIA!

The tab on top by the wire is what you want to pry. Stick a small flathead, letter opener, etc in and push it towards the mirror assembly thus pulling the plastic piece away from the assembly.

Okay, I guess I need more help.

I "made" this tool using an old screwdriver. FIWI, if I were to try to use a regular, "straight" screwdriver, I wouldn't be able to get the tip into the rectangular hole because the handle of the screwdriver would hit the door.

Then, per the instructions above, I tried to pry the mirror cover off by prying with the bent screwdriver in the direction shown in this picture:

Nothing. The cover doesn't budge, even if I pull down on the screwdriver while prying. So what am I doing wrong? Am I prying in the wrong direction? Does the tip of the screwdriver need to go into the hole farther?
