Well this is a surprise. Its winter here even with heated garage the FX is stored the temperature range of 0 degree to 8 degree.

Wash it last week in a rush and left some very noticeable swirl marks on the front fender panel. It was briefly sunny today when i went out and looking at it in the sun. WOW the swirl is no longer visible. Its still there on close inspection but its no longer screaming for attention.

Sorry had to share this guy. It made my day.

I can't wait till summer to come now :)

P.S does anybody know if this clearcoat will last the lifetime of the car? since there is no way for owner to reapply it themselves what are some good way to make sure it last?

So on our cars, does the paint only heal when its warmer outside?

from what i understand it work when the car is in an ambient temperature of 10C or higher. Works best under the sun and hot weather.

But the fx is just sitting in seated garage and the very very occasional sunshine ever since i got it. I wasn't expectin it to work until summer at least.

If you can feel the scratch with your finger nail no heat or buffing will fix that. It'll only lighten it up.

This new self healing clearcoat is some seriously cool tech, think there is a video from Lexus on you tube, check it out, pretty sick!

Yeah pretty much Infiniti invented it and was the first company out with it and now Lexus is copying them :-)

infiniti didn't invent it, ppg developed it with daimler benz, a long time ago really... maybe 05-06 ish... many benz' have had this since then... I always use ppg ceramic clear coat, it's the best, dupont & spies heckler etc have al developed compeating versions now, but ppg is the real deal...

jb, that might come out with wet sanding, not gonna come out with just heat or buff...

Wait not to call you out since your the body shop guy:tongue (2): but I have a question.

1. How is this the same as Mercedes clear coat? Mercedes uses a ceramic clear coat. The service manual for the FX says that there is an elastic resin in the scratch shield paint and mentions nothing of it being ceramic.

2. Ceramic clear coats are harder and resist rock chips, scratches, and swirls more. Where as the Infiniti scratch shield paint is extremely soft and is really prone to rock chips and scratches.

3. If you buff the scratch shield paint hard enough with a lot of heat, the surface actually starts to gum up and become sticky. I've seen it happen on many professional detailing jobs done on scratch shield paint.

Scratch shield paint works by heat heating up the surface around the scratch till the elastic resin in the clear coat actually remelts the resin clear and fills in the scratch. The ceramic clear is different and is something that resists scratches, but doesn't fix them like scratch shield paint.

Here is an interesting read that proves what I'm saying that the ceramic clear coat on Mercedes only PROTECTS it from scratches and what not, but doesn't actually fix the scratch and make it disappear like Infiniti scratch shield paint:

The CeramiClear clearcoat from PPG Industries is the final original equipment manufacturer coating applied to a vehicle, and it protects the color coat while providing a durable, glossy appearance. CeramiClear clearcoat, the first automotive clearcoat to use nanoparticle technology, raises the standard for combined resistance to scratches, mars and acid etch. The patented nanoparticle technology creates a highly cross-linked network at the surface of the coating for superior resistance to damage caused by day-to-day use, car washes and environmental hazards such as acid rain and tree sap. "CeramiClear clearcoat is unmatched in scratch, mar and acid-etch resistance and retention of gloss throughout a vehicle's lifecycle," said Dennis Taljan, global director, decorative products for PPG. "We actually had to create new, tougher test procedures for CeramiClear clearcoat since no automotive coating had achieved this level of mar resistance before."

No where do I see PPG mention that it fixes the scratch like Infiniti's does.

...

Nissan developed their proprietary coating. They did not invent self healing coatings in general.
