I have a Silver 09 FX, and I'm looking to get a roof box for the winter snowboard trips on factory crossbars.

I'm wondering if it's too much silver if I get the box in gray (Thule Atlantis). If anyone here has a cargo box on their FX, please post them here. I would love to see what the car looks like with a cargo box.

I would also like to know if the tailgate will hit the box when it's opened.

174 views and no one has a photo of this. I'm begin to wonder how many people really use this site.

I have a photo of the box on my car online, but I get the retarted message below:
"To be able to post links or images your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 3 posts.

Please remove links from your message, then you will be able to submit your post."

This is what I get for trying to do something good for the FX community. oh well, I know what it looks like on my car.

we have to view the post to see what you are asking. not many people have a roof box on their FX especially the newer FX.

also to post a pic you have to have 10+ posts (so safety reasons...spammers)

I found one for you ...
(squint ...and just pretend its a FX)

Ahh, thanks for the tip. Here's my FX taken at the parking lot of EMS right after the install.

Also, this is on factory crossbars.

Yea, the spoiler actually hits the box, and this is as far forward as I can get it. I can get the hatch to open to about 98% before hitting the box. It rests on the box slightly when it's opened 100%.

I'm hoping that it doesn't scratch the spoiler over time.

Oh, and I also have to remove the antenna that sticks above the satellite receiver.

I thought the silver would be too much silver on the car, and it would not have been an exact color match. So i went with black to compliment the accents.

2010 FX35 Cargo Boxes Options

Preparing for a 2 week Colorado trip in Aug on my 2010 FX35 (Midnight Mocha). Would like to take advantage of time and buy online to save some $$s. Thinking it would be handy to put baby's stroller and misc stuff.

Some of the models I've been looking at online (not knowing if they will fit the FX) - Atlantis 1600, Atlantis 1800, Boxster 611. From what I've gathered from the forum Atlantis 1600 fits the FX - Can I stretch it to go for some of the 18 cubic inches like 1800 or Boxster. Boxster seems to have some good rear design to let open the tail gate.

Papa_giorgio. could you please share what you had bought 1600? - since that pretty much sounds like the max we can go with our FX's. also what kind of cross bars?

what would be your advice: OEM or after market like Thule for the cross bars. Or would you recommend having everything (rails, cross bars) being after market.

I picked up the Atlantis 1600 because it was Thule's Large box at 16cu ft and it was one of the shortest they offer. The 1800 is longer, but with the 1600 already hitting the spoiler, I'm not sure if the extra length would be in the front or back. If you need that space, you should go to an EMS or REI and have them put it on to see if it allows you to open the gate.

As far as the cross bar, I went with the factory bars because I was afraid of wind noise, as it has a slimmer profile than the thick round bars Thule offer. The factory bars only holds 100lbs and the box is 40lbs, so I can only put about 60lbs of gear up there. I was ok with that since it'll only hold a stroller and gear for a weekend, or 4 snowboards, and boots.

I just got back from my first weekend trip with it this weekend, and it was awesome. Wind noise wasn't bad at all with the sunroof visor shut.

Here are some photos from this weekend, lots of bugs to clean off the front.

FX35 w Thule Atlantis 1600

Papa, thanks for the pics - silver looks cool with the thule on top.

I can say w/o any hesitation - your post is the first so far helping out folks like me who want to put a cargo box on their FX. I had tried different search engines just to see if something like what you did already existed and would show up in my search - unfortunately, there isn't any like you did.

Thank you again - If I find the time I'll do as you suggested; go to a place like REI and see for myself if a Boxster works out. If not I know 1600 works. 1800 is obviously out due to its length and no curved rear to accommodate the tailgate.

maveriks, I'm glad I can help. I ran into the same issue when I started this post. I couldn't find any photos of what the box would look like on the 2nd gen FX.

I'll let you know the length of the Boxter when i get home from the office. I have the spec sheet with dimensions of all Thule boxes.

Looks nice. When I need it, I plan on trying out the MacNeil RackSack. Unless someone talks me out of it.

how safe is something like this at high speed. after using my fx for moving purposes i realize we don't have enough cargo space at all and I don't want to risk damaging the leather again. something like this would be good for the occasional trip and outing without having to install crossbars. Is that the biggest? doesn't seem like it would fit much things inside at all.

Hey maveriks, I just checked the brochure, and the Boxter exterior length is 87" vs the Ttlantis 1600 at 74". I know that the Boxter has a cool feature where the back curves up, so that extra length might still be ok for our ride. You should definitely try it out at the store if you can.

Visiting REI

Papa, I've tried SEARS and other folks over the weekend; they had the 1600 (and sport etc that I"m not interested in).

Will be visiting a REI store and see what they got...thanks for your time..

Research Update (Atlantis1600 & Boxter)

Wanted to take a chance and ordered a Boxter from EMS (20% off on Thule Boxes). Deal at EMS helped me afford a Boxter. Short term - my primary usage in addition to cargo is for a stroller on top for long trips. My only remaining concern on Boxter is it being 1/3" shorter than Atlantis 1600 on the inside.

Below is a summary of my research over a lot of days; I hope others like me find it useful. I called Thule for internal dimensions and rear clearance, as this information wasn't easily available online.

External Dimensions: I thought I had put this info here -can't recollect. Some of the models I began with from online reading, not knowing for sure if they all will fit the FX:

  1. Atlantis 1600: 74"L x 36"W x 16.3"H (42 Lbs)
  2. Atlantis 1800: 84"L x 34.4"W x 16.9"H
  3. Boxster: 87”L x 36”W x 15”H (54 Lbs)

Internal Dimensions
:

  1. Atlantis_1600 - 70"L x 34"W x 13.3"H
  2. Boxter - 83"L x 34"W x 12"H

Rear Clearance: From the front crossbar to the rear of the car.

  1. Boxter needs 47"
  2. Atlantis 1600 needs 45"
  3. All other bigger models need 55"
Picture below (on a 45) kind of convinced me that a Boxter would work fine on the FX35.

I was considering to go with 450R rapid aero cross bar set up before I got to know about something outside of Thule and Yakima. It's called the Whispbar - guy on Audi forum had an excellent write-up on this.

It's basketball time now, gotta go - will come back and post info regarding vendors for boxes and racks later in the day.

Adios.
