Removing Side Vents

Has anyone tried removing the side air vent covers? I searched and saw this question asked a few times but saw no definitive answer. I was able to peel back my side vent a bit (from the top) just enough to see that it almost looks like there are clasps holding it in place.

I was hoping to get them removed and bring them in with my wheels to get coated at the same time. Wanted to ask here first before I brake something and/or make this harder and remove parts I don't need to. Thanks!

theres no question there removable, but without seeing & playing I can't know exactly what needs to be done... I'm sure if you remove the rear half of the inner plastic fender liner you'd be able to see behind it & get an idea of how to release it...

Thanks for the quick responses! I'll wait a bit to see if anyone else chimes in, otherwise I'll be the guinea pig and make sure and share the process this weekend. I think being able to just hand off the small plastic pieces to get painted would save a bit on labor and hopefully make for a cheap (but much needed) mod.

I checked my service manual, and it doesn't mention anything about removing the vents. I can't believe that the manual shows u how to pull the frame back into place after an accident, but doesn't show you how to remove the vents.

I got away from this project so i didn't get to strip out the inner liner to get to it from the back side to see of it releases from there, yet. That said, I still think it looks like it could just pull out ... I just don't want to pull too hard and have it snap. Having to spend $150 on a new vent when I'm trying to get that eyesore hidden (at least for my OB it is) would suck, lol

Shumby - there's something about the chrome vents on the 50 that look better I think, at least to me. In my case, my neighbor bought a black Saturn Vue I get to see everyday with those same plastic gray side vents ... just bothers me for some reason :)

And thanks GEE, hope you're fixed up quickly.

I was at my body shop today and considered getting the side vents painted body color when they replace my fender and perhaps installing a side light on the fender. After much discussion we decided that my FX in the diamond graphite looks better with the side vent the pewter colour it is now, it goes with the diamond graphite and also the roof rails.

that's true for diamond graphite. on like a black FX, however, it sticks out like an eyesore

Agreed, the graphite/pewter combo works nice. Interesting on the side light too ... something like the FX37 would look nice I think:

As for my vent, I'm going the gunmetal look to match my wheels. I like this combo here:

Quick chop, although came out a bit dark:

very nice. I'm contemplating if I should go with black vents or a very dark gunmetal gray. But if no other parts are gunmetal gray then it might be just a different type of eyesore

thats hawt, is that picture in the wheels gallery or photochop 2ng gen thread? it needs to be there lol.

I'm waiting until I have my wheels to do my vent and grill because what color they are will ultimately depend on what wheels i get. what do you guys think of cf overlay on the vents? maybe a quite photochop? If a company comes out with real cf vents i will buy it in a heartbeat but for now what do you guys think about cf overlay? too ricey? i will be using high quality 3m ones if i go through with it not crappy cambodian tire tapes

I think carbon fiber would be a nice, subtle look on black to where the vents pop but blend in at the same time. I can picture the below on an OB.

If you have a different color though, then I'm not so sure ... would then have the potential of looking a little tacky I'd think unless there's some carbon fiber theme you're going for. Maybe a set of these would be in order
