so there are a few threads about this topic, but many that I have seen are old on this topic or they are specifically about remote starts AND alarms. I'm only interested in remote start. I don't want to introduce any more complexity, wiring, mods, than I need to other than remote starting the car.

Today at the dealer I inquired about a remote start and they frowned upon it strongly because of the substrantial electonics in the vehicle. He said he's seen many many cars come back sometimes 3 months later, sometimes 5 years later with issues and that there always seem to be some sort of issue that arises whether it's this or that, etc. and just did not recommend it. I mentioned some other Infiniti dealerships do and he said yes, but they just use a 3rd party vendor and that they just don't support it because of what they have seen. I asked if anything for my warranty would void and he said anything related specifically to the aftermarket system that would cause an issue would be voided and he said for example when you install these aftermarket systems you need to cut or soder wires from harnesses and some of those harnesses you can't just get one piece and because of that some of them can run $1,500. So he really recommended against it, but if I do just make sure to get someone at least that can warranty something.

All the local shops around here have bad reviews.

So I started looking on craigs list and there is this guy that has been doing remote starts for 18 years, has own business and comes to your house/garage whatever and does it for you. I told him the car I had and he said he works with Python and Code Alarms and has done it on Nissan's but doesn't recall Infiniti. I told him all I'm interested is remote start and 2000 feet away. Looked up the harness info, etc and said it would be $250 installed using python. I asked him about cutting wires, etc, and he said he just taps into the harness. I actually didn't get all the specifics and was kind of in a rush when I was on the phone, but I'm thinking as long as nothing is cut and can be put back hopefully like factory in case I needed to, then it sounds like maybe it would be possible and keep all warranty. I would even pay him extra to be able to do that if possible. It sounds like this guy with that many years would probably do well and hard to argue with the price. Plus, if this guy turns out good, I would have a connection/relationship for doing some of the other stuff I would potentially want to do like to use the Media Center while driving, using camera all the time like in another thread, etc since I am not electronic savy like that and don't have you guys near me! :frown: I also did mention to him a concern I have is the factory warranty and he mentioned about some law that passed that specifically does not allow a dealership to void anything because of an aftermarket part. I'm sure I would get more details before he started the work, but also wondered if you guys knew what he was talking about.

any thoughts, any recommendations, any questions I should ask this guy? Here is his craiglist in case you are interested to see what I'm talking about:

My goal is retain warranty fully and not start issues with dealership, keep everything else 100% working, reliable, and have remote start.

I'd be kind of worried about letting someone take my interior apart for an aftermarket remote start install. It's one of the main reasons I haven't got the aftermarket Viper alarm system install. Plus all the local shops I went to wouldn't even want to touch the car. They told me the wiring was too complicated.

In my opinion I'd stay away from it. But ofcoarse it's all on you and your decision. Oh and I never heard of such a law. If you ever had a problem with the car wiring related and such, and the dealer can pinpoint back to the cause that it's the alarm's fault, they have every right to void your warranty.

I don't know about the second gens but the first gens can have a remote start and/or alarm installed safely and reliably. As long as the installer is experienced and knows the electrical systems of the FX, there should be no issues.

I have been running a CS remote start for a while and it works flawlessly from both the supplied remote and my ikey.

Also the warranty law that is mentioned is most likely the Magnuson Moss Act.

I've heard a lot of bad stuff also on differents threads here also, but most that I see involve tapping into the alarm and all the other features. What if all I want is remote start? Is there anybody that had issues with only remote start?

Remote start on this would be so sweet because unique to our cars we can have heated or cooling seats already set besides just automatic climate control. In every other car I know it either does not have cooling seats or you have to press to start the heating seats after the car starts. It's almost like this car is begging for auto start! I have friends without auto climate control, without cooling or heated seats that would be automatic and can't live without autostart, but they also don't have any sophisticated electronics.

I have so many more years left on warranty. Man this is a really hard decision for me.

Sounds like aiya is right what the installer talked about

Here's the thing:
If this guy comes to my place to do it and I watch everything and emphasize no cutting or anything like that, I would think if there was an issue I could pay him to just put it back the way it was worse case scenario I think and nothing would be noticed?

yeah as far as the first gens no problems my installer said it was even easier with the ikey but it is all on the installer because mines got the info that he needed from infiniti themselves and no problems 2 years now. running the viper 5902

I don't see why this can't be done. Your going to need a transponder to disable the in car i-key security to start. Just have to find someone who knows alarms real good.

I have the compustar in my fx. Works really well.

Look into your options as for remote start brands, range, extra features (ex. Cell phone remote start and alerts via smart phone)

I'm gonna go ahead & chime in on this one guys because it would appear that I'm the only one on here with a 2nd gen that's rockin a remote start. I went with the Viper 5901 Responder LC3 SuperCode SST 2-Way Security and Remote Start System on my ride & I'v been very happy with it. I had it installed by Best Buy, & the installation alone was $400...

I can tell you this, they ran in to a ton of problems while doing it.. They had my car for almost 3 days. It took several phone calls to Viper to get the wiring set up properly as well as the programming with the 09 electrical set up. The guy told me that if he had to do it again, he wouldn't!

I'v had mine for about 6 months now, and I have yet to have any real problems. My advice, don't have some random guy do it.. The electrical set up on our FX's is comparable to a NASA spaceship I'v been told, no point in having somebody work on it who isn't @ least somewhat familiar with the Infiniti set up. At least with Best Buy you've got a company with a sh** ton of cash on hand to @ least back up their work...

Hope this info @ least helps a little bit. Best of luck to you on whatever decision you end up with in the end...

My dealer installed my remote starter for me. It is pretty much essential up here in Montreal. I went to the best shop in town and he wanted 700 for the whole job with the 2 remotes. Something about having to bypass the wireless key also. It's slightly more complicated, but this place does Bentleys and Porsches so I wasn't really worried. Anyway long story short, I was at the dealer I saw they had a sign for remote starters. I inquired and it was the same 700 just had to pay taxes this time. Because it was done at the dealer they gave me in writing that the warranty is un-effected by this particular job and they will guarantee the work 100%.

Does this mean you can remote start with your oem ikey? Do u know the brand of the remote start?

@Threezero-> By the way, I was originally wanting to remote start with OEM key (there is a link somewhere in this forum of a dealer in Chicago doing it for $595 installed on OEM), but the distance on the OEM key sucks. My coworkers start their car from inside the building (3 minute walk to the car). I can't unlock/lock from inside the building, I have to basically get within 45 seconds walking distance to the car in order for the car to finally seem to pick up the unlock/lock signal. With that kind of range, the remote start in my opinion on a OEM key is useless. I want to be able to turn it on when I'm checking out at the grocery store. I want to turn it on when I'm shutting down my computer at work. That's to me the true advantage of remote start, not to just get your car warmed up for 45 seconds as you are walking to it. Plus I keep the car in the garage when I am at home so I don't warm up in the mornings (I guess I could open the garage door and then start it but that's not the main advantage). So I did originally want OEM but because of this it would be useless to go through the headache of it; which is why I was testing the OEM distance.

@Others-> That viper remote/alarm, yes we've heard and read complicated stories and potential large issues if the installer is not best, but I can see that being an issue tying into alarm and all kinds of features like smart start, etc etc (but I am inexperienced in this field).

If you consider ONLY the remote start and no other funky stuff, don't you think the install would be similar to just like a Nissan? When I talked to the guy, it seemed like all he needed was the harness device piece that bypasses the ikey and that's it basically. This seems really simple, so are all those complexities everyone talking about having to do with the alarm and taping into this or that etc? I'm going to give this craigslist guy another call some time in the next few days because I'm generating the questions I want to ask him before I agree on a job like this. Obviously if so many people are saying stay away, it's complex, and then this guy has been doing it on Nissan's and other cars for 18 years and just appeared knowledgeable over the phone and wasn't really concerned, then I'm trying to figure out what the disconnect is and if it's the non-remote start pieces that are adding to the complexities. Too bad there is not a remote start installer expert around here! ;)

I can't start it with the remote key. I tried to get them to do that instead but they said the wiring wouldn't fit inside the key. Since the remote is 2 way (it has an LCD screen and it tells you if they car actually started).

Word of advice. If every other guy is charging between 500 and 700, usually the guy charging 250 will cause you some sort of headache. That has been my experience, especially with newer more complicated cars.

WOW ok so I decided I am NOT doing a remote start.

I've called like a billion places today and talked to a ton of remote car installers. You could tell the ones who were inexperienced or the ones who really knew a lot. The one guy that seemed to know the most was actually a guy that the Nissan dealership here locally uses. http://www.autoameristar.com/

So I called this reputable place that the Nissan dealership backs and supports the ikey, push button, etc. Talked to the installer and basically they avoid certain makes/years of Infinitis and Range Rovers for two primary reasons. And from the Infiniti, the FX 2009+ is the ones they avoid for liability reasons. He was really really nice so we talked for awhile. Basically dumbing down what he said (and some stuff I probably am translating incorrectly) but basically the reason why our car is too much of a liability is because everything runs of a live data circuit. Unlike other cars like even mercedez, lexus, nissan, etc, you can tap into the wires no problem, but because with this car everything is on a live data circuit, you risk potentially a signal being sent while taping into any of those wires and blowing a cylinder (yes he said that), starter, etc. He said you can't even tap a multimeter to the wire to test it because that could cause something to go off or something depending on what wire you may test. I asked if the push button start or ikey were the issues and he said no not at all, it's the live data circuits that are unique and in a nutshell it's basically a guarantee (2nd reason) almost that at some point you could have some sort of an issue. All components have some sort of life expectancy and also depends on the installation. He said with the Nissans you can actually disconnect the circuit and work on it then, attach the transponder everything to bypass the key, etc no problem but with the Infiniti FX 2009+ you can't and have to bring to the dealer for them to shut it down when they do heavy electrical work. He also said that there will be guys that say they can do it, but the liability comes in right away...basically you can have everything be ok for the first day or first 30 days or first 3 years, 5 years, but then could all of a sudden start having issues since everything is basically in this live brain and you are tapping into it. This data circuit not only controls everything within the car, but also stuff like transmission temperatures, engine temperatures, cylinders, etc, (much more than other cars and I guess the Infiniti and Range rover the whole brain is a live feed to this which makes it unique) so you could be fine and then one day if any of the extensive wires has an issue or any of the aftermarket components sends something bad or wrong from just being old, too cold, too hot, or whatever, you can cause some serious damage to your car and that's basically why. Infiniti I'm sure has failsafe stuff in place, but when you have something that could send bad signals in, who knows if failsafe stuff will even work - he didn't say this, but that's just my take.

All this info was really what I was looking for in reasoning behind why specifically Infiniti and our cars everyone is so against. Now it makes sense. Plus, even if I got these guys to install it that is backed up 100% by Nissan and can do the work great, knowing that something could go bad in the future, doesn't make sense for me to do. Everything at some point could go bad, so unfortunately, no remote start for me :(

Hope this information is useful to you guys! Have a great weekend!

Good stuff man:tup: Thanks for the info.

I had no idea everything was that complicated lol. Kind of scares me now about how I mess with things:bomb:

Yeah to them it was not that it is difficult to install because they do installs for new Nissans and other luxury models all the time, but because of this unique live circuit that Infinitis and range rovers have and 2nd that everything literally everything runs through this and because of those reasons it's just too much liability. He said they go on training conference events all the time on new things etc and they specifically talk about how some cars it's just best to avoid. You could be running your car from remote start and not have the temp level of your trans at exactly what it should be because of all kind of stuff being bypassed and relying on some aftermarket piece to maintain signals. Screw that! I'm not that rich! Lol
