Hi everyone. My wifes 05 FX 35 has a bad headlamp and fog light. We want a slight upgrade from the factory 4300K. Is this the HID bulb everyone gets ? Also, what about Slyvania silverstars for the fog lights? Here's the HID's http://www.theretrofitsource.com/me...87757a8ae4cbc8144a20b336f/3/f/3five_d2s-1.jpg

Thanks Carl

I guess the specs did not paste. They are D2S 35W 5000K

If you want the same color for your fog, go with any 5000K HID kit for bulb type 9006.

He wants a slight upgrade from the factory 4300k, 5000k will accomplish that without much lumen loss and provide a whither light.

Hey guys, running into some trouble. Received my Retrofit D2S 35w 5k bulbs and swapped them out. Originally just the passenger bulb didn't work which is why I was changing the bulbs. After the swap I turn on the lights and the passenger was on , but no driver side. Turned on/off couple times, they came on and stayed on while I took it for a drive. This morning wife was going to work and I wanted to check my accomplishment and there was no headlamps, WTF !!! Side light next to the headlight were on and the fog light too. She said the lights were on AUTO, but had to go to work so I couldn't dive into it. Whatcha think it is? Thanks

Possibly that ballasts are dead? Try with the old driver side bulb on both ballast. There is a yellow ground wire connects to the ignitor. Is it connected?

I did remove the yellow wires, but re-connected them. Can swapping bulbs kill the ballasts? When she comes home I will check with the old/good bulb. Can I just unscrew the cap take off the ignitor, put old/good bulb in and test without removing bulb in housing? BTW, where is the ballasts? I'm hoping its a fuse or connection

Before you panic, do what ^ said. It may be a faulty igniter (the d2s plug you connect to the d2s bulb). Infiniti uses panasonic aka matsushita ballasts but the igniter is external (basically the cable going from the ballast to the bulb).

If its not that, check fuses, maybe you have a short somewhere for some reason, I know it sounds crazy but I've seen too much to disbelieve anything anymore. My igniter failed 2 years after I bought the car but it varies, hit and miss basically

Go figure

yellow wires... I can't recall the colors, I know there's a grounding wire that's yellow I think, its one wire.

You can definitely test without having to remove the bulb in the housing and just pop on the old good bulb on the igniter(socket) and test it that way. Best thing is to have someone turn the lights on while you hold the bulb by the socket...just don't look at the bulb, you'll be seeing dots lol

If you have a rubber glove, put that on and hold the socket with that in case there's a short.... nothing's worse than being hit by 25000 volts... Like I have

When you turn it off, the bulb will be super hot, let it cool then pull it out of the socket..

When my cousin changed bulbs for me they worked and when i got home they stopped. I had him re install the bulbs agan and they never went out again. I would re install the bulb and see what happens. Perhaps it's not in good enough (i know i know, that's what she said) lol

Just want to make sure on bulb placement in the socket. The glass is on top and metal down right? Gonna tackle this tonite

To clarify, you want to know how the bulb is to sit in the headlight and how the plug attaches to the back of the bulb?

- or -

How you can test the bulb outside the headlight?

The plug that attaches to the back of the bulb can seat in four different positions around the bulb.

So it depends how you want the plug cable to sit, whether to the top, the right, the bottom or the left. I like it pointed downwards, there's just more room.

There's two little nipples on the bulb, those have to fit into the grooves of the plug cable seen in the photo below. Make sure you don't push too hard, just turn the plug around until it pops in, then push the plug cable against the bulb and turn right 90 degrees until it stops.

If you're doing this with the bulb sitting outside the headlight, it might be a bit harder since there's only so much grip you can have on the bulb without touching the glass or breaking the ceramic tube carrying the wire just parallel to the glass. I use rubber gloves to get a better grip. If you touch the bulb, no worries, just use a Q tip and some 75% or higher alcohol, rub it clean, let dry.

Here's the update. Last night when the wife got home I went and turned them on and only one came on. Went on\off couple times and both came on, so I went for a driver and no problem. This morning they came on for 1 second then both went out, but fogs and insides lights stayed on.
So now for the troubleshooting. Unscrewed cap, removed sockets on both headlamps and tested both sides separately with the 1 old\good bulb and both sides were good with the old bulb, no issues. Then I unclipped both new Retrofit D2S bulbs and put them in the sockets that were outside the housing and they did the same thing, both on for a second then off and I swapped both bulbs to the opposite side and still on then off.
Lastly, I put the old in one side with the new bulb in the other and the old one stayed lit, but the new stayed for a second then off. It seems like the car doesn't like the new bulbs at all. It's like chasing a ghost LOL. Whatcha u guys thinks?

Check the new bulbs and make sure they both are 35W bulbs

If they're my guess is something is wrong with the bulbs.

The other thing is retrofit doesn't recommend using the D2s 35 bulbs with our ballasts. Most people on here had good results but retrofit doesn't recommend using them. Apparently retrofit says its a hit or miss. If you check their website they lists our ballasts as not compatible with the bulbs

If you purchased them from TRS, give them a shout and they'll send you out a new pair. This seems weird.

One thing for sure is that the Matsushita aka Panasonic ballasts are picky about bulbs that are used. They seem to work best with brand name bulbs (ie., Osram, Philips, etc).

Denso ballasts like Toyota/Lexus and others, are pretty much the best ones that don't care what bulbs are used. They'll work with pretty much anything (probably kill themselves at it too).

In this case I can think of a few things:

- Bulbs are defective and the ballast is going into safe mode after detecting an issue
- Igniters (The plug with the cable) are either dying or weak and can't handle a new set of bulbs but can handle an old set since they have been worked in. Slight chance but possible. I've had one fail after 2 years.

Know anyone with an FX that can test these bulbs out for you? That way you can rule out a couple things. If they do the same on another car, then the bulbs are for sure defective. There's no chance two cars in a row can have bad igniters.

This is what an igniter looks like for Infiniti vehicles:
