Org post "Another rebuild of a '04 FX45"

I know some people don't like seafoam, but I add about a half a can 100 miles before every oil change to the crankcase, my vk45de does not burn any oil at all. I have been doing this since I bought it with no ill side effects. I throw the other 1/2 in the fuel tank.

I know a lot of people trust the seafoam and I've never heard of a bad story. But I dont know about you guys, but it scares me throwing a $5 can of "who knows what" into a $5000(?) engine. But again, Ive never heard of any side effects. I put it into a previous car before and aside from smoking like no other for a bit (put it in oil), I had no issues. I actually tore apart that engine awhile back and it was pretty spotless.

hmm.. i researched a lil and apparently its a petroleum based detergent.. its an actual oil based product so i cant see going wrong with it.. i may give it a shot, see if itll clean up some stuff.. plus i wonder if it'll do anything with the damn floating gas tank dial reading.. my shit is all out of wack

I thought we have the best engines and what ever happened to just changing out your oil and your engine will last for hundreds and hundreds of miles?

I use Sea Foam often in all my cars. I use the gas tank method only though. Never seemed to have any issues using it that way. Why are all these posts about the VK blowing up after I purchase one? lol

+1, change your oil, use good oil, use premium gas.

I have zero issues with mine running near 130k miles, but this is the 2nd or 3rd time I've seen this happen on a VK45DE. I have to think it's mainly burning oil which is common on the VK45DE, and people not topping it back off to normal levels.

apparently thats a common thing with the VQ's n VK's isnt it?, my cousin has a 350z and has to add a quart almost every few weeks to a month.. he switched to a thicker viscosity oil but even still he has to add some every now and then

I think it's best to stick with what Nissan says to do....

stick with 5W-30...this is what Nissan says. Don't change it thinking you are making it better.
stick with minimum requirements for gas from the manual.
stick with minimum requirement for oil, which almost all are good. It's just if you choose a worse one with minimum requirements you just change it more frequently.
don't put other stuff in your engine or fuel. - Nissan doesn't recommend it in their intervals so why should anyone believe the marketing companies trying to make a buck over what your manufacturer recommends for your engine?

but if nissan said to stick w 5w-30 oil, why is it pissing out of my cousins car before he even hits the 3k oil change mark.. if he didnt check his oil consistently and went along with what the sticker says to bring it back to do the oil change he's gonna fry the thing.. i understand the whole suggested and recommended but thats like u said, a suggestion and recommendation, nothing more.. plus going to a slight thicker viscosity isnt going to hurt the vehicle unless ur pouring gear oil in it..

The oil feed holes on nissans are very small. They suggest using 5w-30 because 10w is too thick and causes oil starvation because it cant get through the feed holes fast enough.

I know plenty of people with older cars that are running an even less thicker viscosity just to get better gass mileage. Something then doesn't appear right with that engine if it can't even hold that oil. Just one example...my wife. Her car almost has 150,000 miles and burns 0 oil...even changing oiling sometimes at 7,000 miles.

And I wouldn't go less than 5w either...why risk damaging your engine just to get better gas mileage. You don't think Nissan wants better gas mileage and wouldn't love to recommend and put in 0w? There are obviously reasons why the say what they say and marketing shouldn't influence us otherwise.

I would prob cry if this happened to Lola, I hope she lasts for longer than hundreds of miles! :tongue (2): Had to point that one out, lol...

I understand where ur coming from but some vk or vq are notorious for burning oil and if it means putting a 5w-40 just so it's thick enough to not burn off then be it. Luckily I dont have this problem but it's a suggestion against the heavy oil burning.. There's some members on this forum that are experiencing this problem.. Search up their threads n see what they're opinions are or what they did to fix it

it's one thing to burn some oil as the engine wears, but this one is different, this one blew something, something is damaged in that cylinder. the gutted cats makes me think that someone probably beat the crap out of this thing. gutted cats with probably no tune... that would be my guess :) hey doesn't mention anything about excessive blow by which it probably had, maybe broke a ring or damaged a piston, could possibly be a valve problem too. curious to see what he finds when he pops the head off
