Hey guys, I just wanted to give a heads up on this recall I received in the email. If you're not already subscribed, I'd suggest subscribing to notifications at the safercar.gov site.

Report Receipt Date: FEB 02, 2015
NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V054000
Component(s): STEERING
Potential Number of Units Affected: 16,973
Manufacturer: Nissan North America, Inc.

SUMMARY:

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2008 Infiniti EX35 vehicles manufactured June 29, 2007, to April 25, 2008, 2009 Infiniti FX35 and FX45 vehicles manufactured October 31, 2007, to April 16, 2008, and 2009 Nissan GT-R vehicles manufactured March 14, 2007, to April 25, 2008. The steering column outer tube may not be round, resulting in extra stress being applied to the upper steering bearing. This stress may cause the bearing retainer to fracture, creating extra play in the steering wheel or a possible loss of steering.

CONSEQUENCE:

Extra play in the steering wheel or a loss of steering may increase the risk of a crash.

REMEDY:

Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft on the Infiniti EX35, FX35, and FX45 vehicles, and will replace the steering column assembly on the Nissan GT-R vehicles, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Infiniti owners may contact customer service at 1-800-662-6200. Nissan owners may contact the GT-R hotline at 1-866-668-1487.

NOTES:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

My Wife called Infiniti Consumer Affairs earlier today and they confirmed that our 2008 FX35 is under the recall (via the VIN) so she called our local dealer to make arrangements who also seemed confused at first. I assumed at first it was only the 2009s since I could only see the recall when drilling down specifically to the 2009 FX35 on the safercar.gov site and found no recalls for our 2008. Fortunately, our FX hasn't experienced any strange behavior with the steering as far as we can tell and currently has around 68k miles, but better safe then sorry. I'll let you know the outcome.

my steering seems loose.. i just called for my 08 fx which was made in oct 17, 2007 and it has no recalls.

Ok well after a few additional calls to our dealer, they still couldn't find a match between the recall and our VIN. So my Wife contacted Infiniti Consumer Affairs providing our info again, but this time the VIN didn't match. They mixed up the information earlier somehow, but they did confirm that those affected should receive a letter (if you're currently registered with them). We're not the first owners, so we had to update our contact info.

I am fairly positive it is only 09+ FXs. The recall takes around 2 hours. I am due to have mine done - they got the parts in last week. Apparently it is very straightforward.

JB , let's hope it is a simple one man. My steering is PERFECT right now. Hate for it to get messed up....as can happen.

Could be perfect now but 3 months later there are issues - better to get the fix.

I actually think THIS is why my alignment seemingly could not get corrected in the last year - because of this steering recall. It may be correct alignment but the steering makes it "feel" off. (or low front tires) either way I'm getting the fix soon.

Got mine done, 2009 fx50s. My steering was a little loose and I didn't have any issues. After completion, steering feels tighter. Better safe than sorry!

I posted a question a while back about my 09 FX feeling loose when driving on roads with ruts or uneven pavement. This may be the problem. Anybody that had the collumn replaced have this issue before the fix?
