Matte White PlaticDip FX45 (Test)

I know it sounds ghetto but I just did this for fun and curious of how my car would look matte white. It peals off real easy and that's the main reason i did it.
I've been plastic dipping wheels here and there and follow http://www.dipyourcar.com/ on Youtube. I've watched them dip a whole car matte black and recently did a whole car white so that got me thinking.

I've always thought about doing the FX white since almost all of my other cars are white but i don't want anything permanent until I'm sure of what color i want. Painting my FX would be a big job because i have so much fiberglass work that would have to be taken out so i even thought about doing a vinyl wrap.
Car vinyl wrap would cost me over $2000 and would be a pain in the ass to take off. I was also told that matte white vinyl gets dirty very easily.
Plastic dip cost $60 a gallon X4, comes off easy when you're ready, is a rubbery material so it stays cleaner, and has a better matte finish then vinyl.

This was just a test and i didn't have much time to do it since I'm so busy with work so a friend and I just did a quicky on my driveway. I'm not even sure how long i will keep it on and I'm glad it peals off easy with no residue.
This was the kit that i used and i used up all 4 gallons since white doesn't cover as good as the black.

If any of my friends want to do their cars i told them they can use my gun and buy Gallons at $60 each.

Different colors.

We just washed the car, clay bared, alcohol bath, tapped off big sections, sprayed 4-6 coats, and pealed off what i didn't want. no bother tapping off the lights or side mirrors because this stuff comes off easy.
This stuff can last for a long time but peals off easy when you're done with it.

I still need to wash the car to get off some of the over spray.

I was wondering when someone was going to do this. A bunch of people have been doing it on the bimmer forums. It actually looks pretty good. Looks like you did a good job. Some of the bimmers look horrible.

How much plastidip did you end up using?

Thanks, I used up all 4 gallons and probably could have used a little more just to be safe. i missed a few sections because i was in a rush. Might hit it up with a Plastic Dip spray can behind the side mirrors.

Looking good!

Someone did this on the G forums and it was a pain to remove so he took out the power washer to remove it and ended up taking the paint off lol:

That sucks!!!! I watched a bunch of videos, did a bunch of wheels with plastic dip spray cans, and have a car hood in my back yard that I've been testing it on.
If you do anything less then 3 coats the material is too thin to peal off easily, i know that because i did it on my spare hood in my back yard. They always recommend doing 4-6 coats.
If you're matierial is layed thick enough it will come off like this.

Probably because that guy used a 2500 psi gas powered power washer (probably at full blast).

I did my rims and I feel if I did them again they would look much better. What are your tips for people using it the first time?

For rims i just use the tip that comes on the can.
For whole cars i use this gun

looks good man!!!
how long did it take you?

Thanks.
Roughly it took 2 hours to wash, clay bar, tape, and alcohol bath,
About 2 hours to spray 5-6 coats.
A little over an hour to peal plastic dip off windows, trim, lights, etc...

Still need to clean it up some more today.

How good will plastidip last when you take the fx thru a car wash?

The thing about Plastic Dip is it's strong and protects your paint. Its just a protective coating that you can peal off easily if you do a thick layer. It stays on as long as the edges are good. Car wash might might be too rough and lift up on those edges.

Here's how you wash a plastic Dipped car. Pretty much soap and water on a shammy then spray it off and let air dry.

This car drove trough the car wash with no problems but that's because its a touch free car wash.

Looks awesome, I'd like to hear how it holds up over time.

Power wash 8 month old Plastic Dip. Its strong as long as nothing lift those edges.

That's impressive man, way to go for it! I still like the idea of a light sheen but sounds like thats hsrd to acheive and not where you want to go anyway.

Thanks man, trust me I've had my doubts. I had the kit sitting for a few weeks and even before we did the FX we sat there on the driveway for about 30 minutes saying "are you sure" back a forth. We watched the Youtube video one last time and after the first coat there was no turning back.
