Hey Guys, ive been having this issue when my car is in manual mode and im going around 25-40 mph and i manual downshift from 3 to 2 it makes this metal bump noise from the rear differential or transmission. I went to the dealer, mechanic sat in the car and i test drove, he heard it and said theres is a problem, he said maybe the rubber of the differential is ripped or some other jargon i didnt catch up, so they took my car in, next day Service **** Rep said theres nothing wrong.
This happens frequently, its embarassing when im with friends, anything i can do? call Infiniti Customer Service and or Consumer affairs?? Have you experienced this before?

Thank You!

Try and reproduce the noise so that you can get an idea about when and what makes it happen. If they can reproduce it they should be able to find out what's causing it.

the mechanic was present and he said yes somethings wrong, next day service dude calls says nothing wrong, thats what got to me.

They pull that all the time, you just have to stick it out and keep pushing the issue. Try and get different opinions from different mechanics in other shops and dealerships. You need to become the expert and learn what the noise could possibly be and be confident that you WILL find out what is causing it, even if it takes a while. Good luck!

Horrible clunk when downshifting 3rd to 2nd only in manual mode

Just wondering if any of you experienced this problem.
It's been there for about a year now and I was too lazy to address it until now.

Note that normal automatic mode is fine no problems at all.
Only in manual mode, when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd whether it be slowing down or trying to accelerate, there is this "clunk" from the transmission.

Half of the times just a simple hard clunk and the other half, horrible just horrible grinding clunk... pretty scary actually... but it doesn't happen every time I downshift from 3rd to 2nd. Maybe once every 4~6 downshifts I make (3rd to 2nd).
the other downshifts are fine (5 to 4, 4 to 3)

Anybody? anything I should take a look at?

I have had the same problem since 2006, dealer made bullshit excuses that its normal, but its obviously not. They changed my rear subrame because of a bad bushing. Problem comes back time to time. But i know what you talking about.

Thanks Dracula. yeah you are having the same problem... seems like it's not that common among the fxers.
Interesting though yours is an 04 as well.

i dont think its the differential, but that problem has stopped for almost a year and half. I dont know if it was related to my busted control arm, motor mount or rear subrame bushing; but it stopped. You know it might even be the tranny mount going bad, but havent checked mine to see if thats bad. Hi heard the sounds coming from the tranny though, like something is broken in there. But check those thinks that i mentioned, cause the busted part might transfer the sound through your chasis.

Well, once I actually started, the closing of your FS thread was a bit of a:

I know exactly what you are talking about. But my issues happens in automatic mode. https://www.infinitiscene.com/search/1/?q=11790-3rd-gear-shutter/page2 : #28
I took it in to the dealer Monday, the dealer calls me back the next day telling me that they couldn’t duplicate the issue when the tec took it out for a test drive. “When would you like to pick up your car up and we have to charge you $120. Since nothing is wrong with the transmission.” (Keep in mind that I’m still covered by powertrain warranty) So after going off on him he requests for me to come in and take it out for a test drive with one of the tecs.
My reply: I’m not sure when it’ll happen, so if I have to I’ll take it out for 10 minutes or 10 hours until it happens. Guessing he got the point because he tells me instead of you coming in and test driving it, would it be ok for the service manager (the same service manager that I chewed out last time for not covering my p/s pump because my warranty was up by 2 days) to take your car home for the night instead of his demo to see if he can duplicate it?
I go off on him again, and told him if I have to I’ll drain the transmission fluids, run it dry and burn it up, put the old fluids back in and drop it off to you. Couple seconds pass with complete silence, then he says let me see what I can do. It’s Friday now and to honest I have no idea what’s going on with my FX.

Oh, and the loaner they provided me with…… I’m happy I got one but WTF it’s like………… never mind I’m not even going to start on that.

Sorry for the ^. I have my Invidia’s sitting in the garage since last Friday and just itching to install them. LOL

yours is a different issue.
a hard clunk shift going from 2nd to 3rd (in manual mode) is apparently considered normal from what I have learned.

yours does look somewhat serious though if it's happening in full auto 1 to 2 and 2 to 3.
You should have them replace your tranny if you can get on top of the dealer.

As for Dracula and myself, our problem is yet another issue where in manual mode, only going from 3 to 2 there is a shutter/clunk whatever you wanna call this terrible noise, in the transmission area.

I have same issue downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. Honestly im thinking its a mount that might be wearing out. I had an Infiniti G20 previously and thought i had a transmission problem and ended up being a motor mount.
