Kind of an obscure mod, searched for relevant threads, didn't see anything so I thought I'd post it. Going to have my rear lenses lacquer tinted (and partially body color matched) so I wanted them smooth and found this thread - http://www.miata.net/hakuna/polished lenses.html total process for all four rear FX lenses was about 45 minutes, below are the "before" tinting results. Apologies for no before images, once I got started I didn't think to take any pics. I assume this mod will work very well for film tints as they won't have to run over the serial code letters and numbers which made me crazy on my third brake light (I am actually stripping off my third brake light film today so I can wet sand/polish it as well, then I'll have it sprayed at the same time as my other lenses)

Pictures of polished lenses minus serial numbers-

Falls into the anal category perhaps? Pleased that you guys didn't respond with a "uhh, its been posted.......thread ######"

I think I remember reading something about this. Maybe someone was asking if it could be done. Would be damn near impossible to find though.

Now we just need some after tinted pics. :wink (2):

really I think it's just normal to smooth that for tinting, I mean the lenses need to be sanded anyway... it would be much harder to try & maintain that text that it is to just sand it off & if it wasn't sanded completely smooth there then it would just look like a blemish... there is one little tiny low spot on each lense that winds up looking like a little dimple after it's tinted, but that one spot is a bit too low to try & sand completely out... I think that spot is the injection point from when there cast

Yeah, the dimple is the injection point. PITA, they could have run it on an edge but burying it in the letters/numbers was just easier. Smoothing/polishing should be a mandatory move for anyone doing film, my third brake light never looked good where the film passed over the serial #'s, all bumpy and raised up......
