Seen a couple threads on here about pulleys, have been reading about them forever and decided just today to pull the trigger on a set of stock sized lightweight pulleys from Unorthodox Racing.

One question - should I go ahead and get new stock sized belts at the same time, or would using the same belts (currently installed) be fine?

FI is on the horizon, but until then, I'll use this set.

I will take your advice on the harmonic damper on the crank when the FI kit in on deck. I read the pulley thread and tried to find the fluidampr pulley, but couldn't at four different shops listed on the fluidampr website. It came down to the Stillen set vs the Unorthodox set and the thread made me lean towards the UR set. Just seems to be more people out there that have this set, and not a whole lot of problems listed that I could find.

I'll be keeping my eyes open for the fluidampr harmonic damper crank pulley...

Ur pulley for the alt and the idler are available individually from the UR site. Haven't looked up the fluidampr in a while. They had or have 2 versions, one if an overdrive one is stock diameter. Jegs and or summit racing should have it.

I checked both Jegs and Summit! Not sure if I was just missing it or what? :err:

But thanks. When it comes to the crank pulley, I understand how important it is. Cost shouldn't be a factor. This is the only thing I could find on the fluidampr website:

This was the only one and since there is no picture I don't even know if this is just a damper or a damper pulley. Can anybody confirm the P/N? And while we are talking about it, does anybody make a stand alone damper you can use with any crank pulley?

Our current crank pulley is not damped, so I am guessing there is no issue with running the lighter UR stock size pulley set until I go FI. Once it's time for the FI install, I'll include the damper/crank pulley. And I'll have a UR lightweight crank pulley for sale.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. That's a lot of polished parts! Looks so sweet~!

I see the pulley. Just need a part number - or need to confirm the part number I found is the one you have!

640902. Done deal. Thanks for the catch! Throughout each of my threads I say that I want to maintain some of that core FX feel, but improve on the overall capability. I also want to keep this car forever, so longevity is absolutely a priority.

  • Harmonic Balancer, Internal Balance, Aluminum, Black, without Underdrive Pulleys, Nissan 2003-06, 350Z, 3.5L
  • Using only 3 parts--a laser-welded sealed housing, an internal inertia ring, and highly viscous silicon fluid between the two--these SFI-approved Fluidamprs can control all crankshaft vibration, not just a limited frequency range. As a result, you get reduced wear on the main bearings and timing gear, more stable valvetrain operation, and less chance of crank failure.
Back-Ordered with a tentative shipment date of 08/07/09.

Do you happen to know how the Fluidampr compares to the stock crank pulley in terms of weight?

I'm sooooo glad I saw this!
I've been looking and looking at stock size pulley for a while now.
I planned on getting one and I didn't know your supposed to go with the harmonic balanced.
Good looking out rookie!

get harmonic balance if you plan on going FI due to it being a couple of pounds heavier. If your going to stay stock then just get the light weight one.

Bearing damage at the crank seal generally occurs slowly, from vibrations. You can bolt on a lightweight pulley and if things are not balanced perfectly, you can create damage that might not surface for 40,000 miles. This is based on general car knowledge and not specific FX experience. Haven't heard about any crank failures here and only a couple on the 350 forums. A damper crank pulley is just smart protection for everbody, IMO. The FX should just come with one, stock.

Yes, the damper pulley is heavier than stock, which gives you the opposite of a desired performance effect. But you can balance that by getting lightweight accesory pullies and/or the underdrive damper pulley as an alternative. Either way, a damped crank pulley is a good idea.

As for lightweight accessory pulleys, a few people on the scene here have the Unorthodox Racing (UR) and other's have the Stillen set. I bought the UR set, but will wait to install along with the damper pulley and new belts.

Okay, so if someone can spell it out for me. I do plan on going FI in the future. Should I go with Fluidampr Harmonic Damper + UR alternator & idler?

Yes. The UR parts will help offset the added weight of the new crank pulley, from what I understand.

Revisiting those pictures of Rookie's engine - are there two aftermarket belt tensioners installed?

For the FI application, do you also recommend additional belt tension control?

UR set arrived - they are MUCH lighter than I expected them to be! Belts and Fluidampr crank pulley are on the way...

Rejected

Just got this note today from Summit Racing:

We are contacting you to let you know the Fluidamper harmonic balancer has been cancelled off your order. It is no longer available from the manufacture. We apologize for any inconvenience. If you have any questions please call our customer service department at 1-800-517-1035 and reference your order number.:err:...

So I guess this means Summit no longer carries the Fluidampr part - still want to buy this, so I'll be checking other sites for either the stock size OR under-driven Fluidampr crank pulley.

I have the two lightweight accessory pulleys and new belts waiting for install till this part arrives. If anybody knows where to get one, I'm listening...
