Did anyone else know that our 7 speed automatic transmissions are maintenance FREE!! I just found this out today when I called service. I also looked in the maintenance book and the service manual. Apparently the 7AT & fluid is supposed to be a maintenance-free item because the tranny fluid lasts almost forever. The fluid case is sealed off completely. The only time they would get rid of it is if the transmission was in need of serious repair or some type of service.

It's a nice thing to know that I never have to change the transmission fluid:tup:

Hahahahaha no fluid ever lasts forever. I hope you were being sarcastic.

The real world meaning of that is the lifetime of the warranty on your FX...

Ken you are correct about that. That lifetime fluid for the transmission showed up at the same time as free maintainence did on BMWs...heck of a coincidence huh.

My mom and I have owned numerous BMWs and always had the transmission fluid replaced at independent shops as most BMW service centers refuse to do it.

Well I don't mean forever like that, but the lifetime of the FX. Atleast that's what the service advisor told me on the phone. I guess I must me a noob cause I didn't know there was such a thing as maintenance free transmissions. Every vehicle I've in the past always needed a fluid change at 30K and a flush at 60K.:tongue (2):

I probably would continue to do the same with your FX. Unless you are getting rid of it before you hit higer mileage, if so then let it fail when the new owner gets it changed as the shock of the new fluid at/near/over 100K miles may just sent the thing to its grave:smug:

I agree. Changing fluids is not that big of a deal. Plus you can tell how the tranny is holding up based on the condition of the fluids.

It says the transmission is not servicable at all. I don't know, I'm confused I guess. It says in the service manual that the fluid is designed to last the life of the car. The only time it should be drained is if the transmission is in need of serious service where you would need access to the fluid case, which in that case you would drain it.

I plan on keeping the car forever, or however long it lasts:tup:

This is per the TSB:

If Warranty repairs are being done on a transmission listed in the chart below, the listed fluid must be used. A claim to Infiniti for warranty, service contract, or goodwill repairs to the transmission listed below may be denied if Genuine Nissan ATF fluid is not used as specified by the part number in this bulletin.

If Customer Pay service or repair of the transmissions listed below is done, the fluid type listed in the chart below must be used. Infiniti recommends the Genuine Nissan ATF fluid part number listed below be used.

7 SPD RWD: Matic S: 999MP-MTS00P

At the end of the bulletin, it states... 1. Use Matic J if Matic S is not available.

It's your car, but since you plan on keeping it for a long time do yourself a favor and have it changed at least at 50K mile intervals.

I don't believe there is a "drain plug" You can change fluid by using the running engine to pump it out while you simultaneously add fluid.
My recommendation. Have the fluid changed every 30 to 40 thousand miles by having the dealer pump it out using a special machine designed for the job.
Its cheap insurance :smile (2):

Went to the dealer today about this. Actually I went to two dealers around me. Both of them refused to change the transmission fluid. I just spoke with them to see if they would do it and they refused. I wasn't going to have it done, but I wanted to check with them first. Both said there is no need to change it now or 100K miles and beyond from now.

They also told me having the transmission fluid changed outside of the dealer would void the warranty on the powertrain. So I'm not screwing with anything.

And there was a TSB printout they gave me stating that the tranny fluid should only be drain and filled during transmission warranty repair.

This also explains why no one on the G37 forums with the 7at transmission never change the fluid as your not suppose to at all unless some sort of warranty work is being performed on the transmission itself.

I've even checked the factory service manual and it is stated in there too.

Yep that's what BMW said and we went ahead and changed the tranny fluid in all our cars. None of them failed.

Dealers are commonly called Stealers for a reason. If you choose not to change it, then please never do. A late change (+100K miles) will probably cause it to lock up.

It's too bad that if/when it does fail there will be no warranty and the Stealers will be more than happy to charge for the replacement.

Last week when I got maintenance done on mine, the service manager said the trans and coolant only needs to be changed every 100k miles.

The coolant I wouldn't really wait to do every 100k. I'm going to be changing mine every 30k as recommended in the service manual.

I checked out the manual and yes it does say 30k....yet another question to ask the dealership why they told me something other than what the manual suggests when I'm in there next time....thanks for the heads up to ask why they said that...

I think I know why they told you to change it every 100K miles. The 2009+ 2nd gen FX's come equipped with Nissan long life blue antifreeze. It's the new type of antifreeze they use in all of their newer model cars for Infiniti's and Nissan's compared to the old green antifreeze. It has a life rating of 10 years/100,000 miles.

I'd still do a drain/refill every 30K miles, and a full flush at 60K miles just for a better piece of mind.

Aaron I responded to your PM. I am also putting the response in your thread so others can add or even correct anything just incase I may be wrong.

Aaron I am more familiar with BMWs than newer Infinitis. However I will tell you what I know. I understand that the newer transmission fluid is lifetime fill. The US Gov't considers the "lifetime" of a vehicle as 10yrs /120k miles. All car manufacturers build to this specification. So it makes sense for them to call it lifetime. The viscosity of these new fluids do not break down until around 100K miles, but at this point the clutch packs have dumped lots of debris into the fluid which has deposited in various parts. At this point if a fluid change is done then the debris breaks loose and travels to other parts, bam there goes the transmission.
Regarding the drain/fill and flush. At 30K miles without any transmission issues I would say drain/fill and replace the filter (if possible). Flushes can be done using a pump or using the transmissions own line pressure (based on type of machine). The machine that uses line pressure is better IMO because if there is anything lodged anywhere that the transmission hasn't dislodged on it's own, it is not going to dislodge while being serviced using this method.
I think that since this is a sealed unit the filter is contained in the pan. So a fluid drain and fill at 50K miles is what I would do. At 100K miles I would change the pan and filter while doing another drain/fill or even a flush with a machine that uses line pressure to cycle the old fluid out while replacing it with new fluid. I also would recommend using factory fluid.

I don't know if this helps or not. What I would do is check with Infiniti N/A and see what they say. I know you plan on keeping your FX for a long time, and the warranty will be long gone before a transmission failure, even if you leave the fluid alone and just drive her.

Nothing is maintanence free. Trust me. I had BMW before with maintance free as well transmission oil. It was sealed as well. But just ask yourself a question "How do they check transmission level if it is sealed with their finger?"
Answer is it is not that sealed.

Well after 60k miles I took BMW X5 to dealer and made them change the "life-time" oil in transmission,it came out to be dirty dirty and wouldn't last any longer !!!

Life time is over as soon as car gets out of warranty at 60k :-) Hahahaha. That is what Infiniti counts your transmission will lasts.

They flushed the transmission and it became so much smoother.

So I wil ldefinetely will change my oil in transmission every 30k or so to prolong the life as well as differentials.
