Humming Noise Coming From Engine - Need Help

As the title says, I am getting a strange humming noise coming from my engine. At first I thought it was my tires making then noise, but it seems to be getting worse every day and it definitely sounds like it is coming from the engine. It is starting to get pretty loud but I haven't had the time to bring it into the shop. My extended warranty also just expired..go figure.

Does anyone have any idea what this noise could be coming from? I would like to have an idea of what the sound is before bringing it anywhere.

that sounds bad, sounds like ur in a small airplane. If the sound u hear is coming from ur wheel area, then its ur bearings.

Yea it is bad, and only getting worse. It is hard to tell exactly where the noise is coming from. That noise sounds like the bearing to you? It sounds like it is coming more from the engine bay. I don't think it would be the pulleys because I just had both the pulleys and belts replaced.

Did they over tighten the belts?. I would loosen the belts a little and go for another ride... Too loose a belt and you get slippage and squeeling... is this what it sounds like when they're too tight?

Definately doesn't sound like a wheel bearing to me

The sound is not a squeal at all though and it does not make this noise while idling which leads me to believe it is not an issue with the belts. I opened the hood and listened for a good 5 minutes and heard nothing. It only starts to happen at around 25-30MPH and up. The faster I go the louder it gets. Could this be an issue related to my engine running too lean due to breather mods with no tune? If so, what would be affected?

With just those 2 lines, first time comes to mind is wheel bearing. Get a passenger to sit around while u drive it up to speed, that might be able to determine where it's coming from.

Hmm...I just listened to some youtube videos of bad wheel bearings and I guess they sounded kind of similar. I will be pissed if it is the bearing because I just had my car in a few months ago for the dealer to check everything while it was still under warranty and I specifically asked them about the bearings but they said they were fine. I guess I will have to find a shop to bring it to and have them diagnose it in person. Thanks for the help/suggestions.

wouldnt a alternator make a humming noise when going bad?

If it was the alternator I would think it would make the noise while idling which it does not. I guess it is a possibility however.

it would be best to just bring it in to pepboys and they'll put it in a lift where they'll use a stethoscope to see if it is indeed his wheel bearings.. so much better than driving around with a friend, second guessing if it is the wheel bearings or not.. they'll charge you $20 that for peace of mind..

Yea, thats what I am going to do. I already had a friend driving around with me and neither of us could figure out exactly what it was. We did both think it was coming from the engine, but didn't rule the wheels out. Thanks.

Can you only hear it while moving? If so it's most likely wheel bearing.

Yes only while moving. I brought it to a local STS today and they put it on a lift and listened with a stethoscope but couldn't hear anything. They were about to close so there was only one mechanic in. They said to bring it tomorrow morning so they can have someone else accelerate while it is on the lift and listen again. Are wheel bearings expensive?

About $100 each. Rears are more of a pain to replace.

How many miles on the car? I have found mine start to go out after 100,000 miles on two different FXs.

Well you guys are right. I just got back from the shop and it is the front drivers side wheel bearing. Thanks for everyone input. They wanted $500 to replace it. I think they said the part from them was around 385. Seems pretty damn high considering the price Zebra posted above.

Thanks! Do you know if this is 100 bolt on as is? Are the hub and bearing are pressed together here? Seems like a great price if it is.

^Never mind. Just read through the whole listing and it is pressed. Thanks.

Does anyone know if a 2005 Nissan Murano AWD uses the same hub/bearing and the FX35?

Well, I went to get my bearing replaced today and apparently the bolt that needs to be removed to take off the abs sensor is frozen on there and needs to be heated in order to get off. They said if they did that it would destroy the sensor and that I would need to get a new one before they can do the work. Does this sound legit?

Does anyone know how much this sensor costs/ where the best place to get one is?

Thanks.

That sound about right on the abs sensor. Mine was seize in the hole that I have to drill it out. The bolt that mount it to the hub/knuckle snapped off as well. I paid $128 at www.rockauto.com back in Feb. Just check, its at $156 now, http://www.rockauto.com/dbphp/x,catalog,903,partnum,5S10694,d,AIRTEX_5S10694.html

The Standard Motor Products one only $112 at rockauto.

I'm just wondering if there is any way to check how bad the sensor is(if it needs to be replaced) before going to the dealer for hub replacement?
