Sometimes when I speed off or hit the gas kinda hard the exhaust makes a rattle sound but I only hear it from the right rear of the truck, does anyone know what that could be?

Stuff shifts around when you accelerate so something could be touching, or maybe something is loose and resonating/vibrating. You'd just have to do a visual inspection to check for things like that.

Ok thanks, I may have to take it to a local muffler shop to have it looked at. When I put it on the lift I couldn't find anything wrong or out of place..

I swear at around 4-5k RPMs I can hear a washer rattling around, but who knows if I could ever find it. A good way to check for leaks is look for black soot on your exhaust at welds and connections.

Since yours is an 03, most likely the rivets that holding heat shields is coming loose shifted. When you accelerate the exhaust move and hitting the heat shields.

the collars holding the heat shields get old and the shield rusts ... one end will eventually come loose and rattle just like that - you can cut it off or bend it out of the way, replacing it is a bitch

I had a horrible rattle coming from the heat shield around the muffler. I took it completely off and couldnt find any loose nuts or anything wrong, so i put it back, still rattled, so I shot some foam insulation in the crack to snug it up, no more rattle. It may be a b**** to get off down the road but i doubt ill ever have to remove it again.

Did u use any special foam and what the brand u used?

thanks

I've found when you get under there and inspect you really have to hang on the pipe and move it around, also use a rubber mallet to tap on all close areas to the exhaust to see if something is loose. AND If your cats are bad it may be an opportunity to weld in some quality less expensive HFC's......just sayin'.

Probably just standard expanding foam they sell at hardware stores for insulation. Stuff is nasty to work with though, it basically sticks to anything it touches including clothes and doesn't wash out. Used to use it to try and eliminate rattles in stereo installs.

FYI. I had the annoying rattle when I started my car and also at 2-4k RPMs. I mitigated this by cutting out the exhaust shield in the middle section of the vehicle. It took a few hours with the skill saw but its now silent! Thanks guys for the tip on this.

One of the bolts on my heat shield which is attached the the rear muffler broke off so as I drive all it does it squeak, what is the purpose of the heat shield there? Is it safe to remove the heat shield n leave it off?
