Dxtreme1 Stereo Sytem Upgrade

Finally got almost 99% of all the things I need to complete
my stereo system upgrade. I still need to verify the wiring
on the Bose system so I can tie it up to the Alpine Processor
For the meantime I'm starting with the fiberglass enclosure to
house the 2 8 inch Alpine Type R subs.
For anyone that may fear to tackle such a job. I am no Pro and
is a self-taught Car Audio/Video DIY guy. You just need some
patience and just need to take your time but it can be down with
minimal tools.
I start off prepping the surface to be glassed. Once cleaned I
then mask off the area and all adjacent areas close by to avoid
accidental spillage. Do your best to keep the mask job as clean
and smooth as possible.

Spray on some spray-on adhesive(I use 3M Super 77)and once it tacks up you apply sheets of
alluminum foil. The combination of the masking tape and foil will make it easier to detach
the fiberglass mold from the panel.

Now using pre-cut fiberglass fabrics(cut different lengths and use accordingly - short ones
for the more curved areas). I just use the Fiberglass Resin available at any hardware store.
For beginners I would advise going to your nearest Tap Plastic or any Plastic Supply store and
buy their One to One Ratio resin and hardener to eliminate mixture guesswork. Its ok to not get
this part super smooth. You can clean up the raised parts with a Dremel or a rotary or sanding
tool.

Once you lay about 3 to 4 layers of fiberglass let the resin cure completely. I use a heat gun
to hasten curing time. Once fully cured the mold should come off with just a slight pull from
end to end. Your mold should come out somethng like this.

If you do it right your panel should look like this. As you can see just like it was before.
No mess no left over tape or foil.

Ok....thats the first part of many to come. I will update this thread as I progress through the
project. For now I'll offer a sneak peak. This is experimental right now...Not sure if this will
be the final installation of the amp/processor rack. I will be doing a fiberglass mold to house
the equipment inside the spare tire. The equipment will be raised and mounted then surrounded by
a fiberglass enclosure with LED edgelit plexiglass surrounds around the amps. The processor will
be mounted on a pedestal and a plexiglass mount(LED back lit). The spare tire oem cover will be
modified to fit a Plexiglass window to have full view of the equipment but will have a cover to avoid
scratches when loading up the cargo space. I am designing a quick connect/disconnect system for all
the audio and power cables so I can easily get to the spare tire if needed.

Nice. Great job, keep us updated.:good:

PS Why you didn't use the lower compartment space? You not going to use it anyway.

Thanks guys for all the encouragement. Just a quick update. Finally got a copy of the Bose Wiring information from the Stereo Shop I get all my stuff from so I can get most of the wiring done as well. I may have to do a temporary amp/processor rack just to sort out everything. I've also got 99.2% of the stuff I need the .8% being the little things like the materials for the quick connect/disconnect connectors for the power and audio cabling, video screens,headsets,PS3 maybe PS4 when in it comes out, and the power converter for the gaming/entertainment console). I picked up the aux battery, a new main battery, all the power cabling and audio cabling need to wire up the electronics. No pictures for now but I will be working on the system through the weekend and hopefully have more details and pictures for you guys by next week.

Great pics and thanks for sharing. Would love to try making something out of fiber glass one day, just need an excuse now :smile (2):

Excellent idea Dxtreme1 :-)

What kind of radio are you using with your processor?
Before I owned an IVA-W502 with the Imprint PXA-H100, but now with the ICS-X8 all is integrated and the quality is a bit better.

Good luck for your hard work.

Quick update....did the first layer of glassing the front of the enclosure....so far so good. The shape held up exactly how I had it when I laid the fabric on. Now I wished I had my days off already so I can finish the enclosure already. I want to move on to the amp rack and the wiring already. Just a quick tip....on the previous pics I had the subs propped up already with the wood braces however, to get the frames propped up it would be impossible to do it with the subs mounted. I picked up this tip from YouTUbe ideally you would need to use poster board...if not readily available printer paper(a couple of overlap layers may be needed to give it rigidity). The board or the paper will be used to create a tube same diameter and length of the actual sub when mounted on the frame. You tape or hot glue the tube in place now you should be able to get the necessary clearance to mount the subs properly using one hand to hold the frame and one to glue the stands. Update....completed glassing the front part of the enclosure and did a quick fitment check. Looks good so far. Some gaps, could just cover the enclosure and call it a day but will Bondo the gaps for a tighter fit. Also did the mould of the spare tire to use for the amp/processor rack but no pictures of that for now. I will post pics of it once I get a few layers of glass on it. As you can see on the pics below the seats are set to the most leaned position and the enclosure was designed around that to ensure it doesnt impede with the seat operations. Same thing with the seat levers. I still have full access designing the enclosure around it.

Update. Here's a picture of a few of the equipment that I need to install still....I still have a few I did not include since I need to test fit or modify them to fit like the self-amplified Center Channel Speakers.

Alpine Pro seperates for the front. Focals K2s for the rear doors.

Had to build out the gaps with Bondo....

Enclosure smoothed out...almost ready for upholstery. Also finally figured out how to mount the enclosure without drilling into the wheel well panels. I'll take a picture of that once I get to the mounting part.
