driver door handle came off....need some help

wifes goes to open door and the handle cracked off from the inside of the door. If your standing infront of the door to open it, on the right of the handle (left of the key hole) it looke like the plastic latch cracked. called dealer and they want 130.00 for the chrome handle and 185.00 to install :eek.:. is it pretty straight forward? seen a thread on the encrusteon mod (sp??) , to pull the plug on the inside of the door and to loosen (not unscrew it) , and it should come off. am i missing anything ? thanks
 
after looking at it a little closer and seeing the escustoen mod write up. It looks like that writeup is for the right side of the handle ( cover and the keyhole only ) , so by unscrewing the torx screw in that mod , it won't loosen the handle i need to re-place. Anyone done this or have a how-to ?

So, dealer quoted several hundreds for a new door handle and replacement. I saw people taking their cars to the dealers for this, and also did not see anybody explaining how easy this job is.

1. Order new part from the web, I paid 78 dollars.
2. There is no reason to remove the door liner or anything major.
3. There is a little rubber grommet inside the door, remove that plug and you will see a T30 torx screw, that torx screw connects the door handle escutcheon, ie the chromed piece next to the door handle. Now, I could not find a magnetic torx bit, and the hole is tight and there is a risk that the screw falls inside the door. What I did, I used a pincher that grabs to the base of the screw once I had loosen the screw of the escutcheon.
4. Pull out the eschucheon and then pull out the broken handle.
5. Install the new handle, push in towards the rear and then slide forward.
6. Put the esuctcheon back and tighten the screw
7. Replace the rubber grommet.

If you do need to take the liner of, there is one screw under the inside door handle and two more inside the fake metallic looking part of the inside door handle. Pry it off to get access to the two screws and then just pull the liner off. There are 3 eletric plugs that you need to disconnect and the cables for the inside door handle. Then remove the plastic and try to get access to the bottom part of the door to find your screw. Stuff the top part with something so it won't fall too far when you do it again.

Now that you mention this, I do seem to remember hearing the same. I cannot remember if it came out when I did the escutcheon mod.
 
Mine has the ikey. I never use the button. Could I just replace it with the non ikey one. The touch entry one is almost $200

Is this a common problem?
 
Wow! That is sacrifice! I live by that little button and would definitely pay the higher amount for it.
You use it differently and it's your choice, but think of resale value too.
 
Will it fit is my only question. Resale value? Ha. My mods have killed that already :-). Not planning to sell it.

Also I plan to vinyl wrap my fx soon and the non button door handles will he easier to wrap :-) if they will work
