Dealer BS. Are you kidding me?

So, my wife and I have been smelling the notorious rotten egg smell from the FX's exhaust every so often for the last several weeks. I have researched this issue pretty thoroughly and also personally experienced the problem on other vehicles; It has always been due to the failure of one or both catalytic converters. After I found some info here on the scene about the Federal Emissions exhaust system warranty extension (96months/80,000mi), I scheduled an appointment with my local dealer and dropped off the FX yesterday for repairs. By noon today I had received no word so I assumed they had found the culprit and were working to fix it.
I get a call at about 2pm from a 20-something kid who works at the dealership and the first thing he asks is what kind of gas I use. I told him that I fill up with premium at Shell 90% of the time and the rest of the time I go to whatever decent station I am near. I then ask if the reason he is telling me this is because my cats are not faulty. He says "My master technician (I giggled) says the cats are fine and also that its really common for people who use Shell gas to report the sulfur smell because Shell puts sulfur in their gasoline." I immediately asked to talk to this so called master technician to get a technical explanation but apparently he was not available. Thinking I could catch him before he went home for the day, I jumped in the loaner EX35 and headed across town to the dealership. Well, when I get there the master tech is conveniently absent and when I start asking the tool I talked to on the phone questions his face goes blank like I just asked him to recite the ins and outs of quantum mechanics. To make matters worse, just when I'm getting annoyed he tells me I owe them $55 for an inspection and it's not covered under the extended warranty because the cats aren't bad. Then I look at the invoice. It says they were "unable to replicate issue" and that part of this inspection included measuring the tread on my 2 week old tires! Now I'm well beyond annoyed and I can tell that talking to this guy is going nowhere so I pay the $55, get my keys and leave.
I didn't even make it 2 blocks before I smelled the rotten egg smell again.

Sorry for the long story but here's my question: Before I go back tomorrow and interrogate this "master technician", is there any way this smell that is getting progressively worse is the sole product of using Shell premium gasoline? I have used Shell gas for years and use it currently in my A4. NEVER have I smelled this smell from the Audi and never have I heard of this ever happening to anyone else.

Have the battery checked when I had the same issue with sulfur smell it turned out the battery was bad and the cabin fresh air vent is right by the battery.

That was my first move a few weeks ago. Since I installed the new Optima D35 (completely sealed) the smell has continued to get worse.

Does the Shell station you go to sell diesel? I have seen cases, although never actually experienced any, where diesel has been inadvertently mixed, through tank leaks or sloppy supply truck drivers, and diesel contains sulfur that builds up in the cats and smells. Could be a stretch...but maybe trying a different station.

Could it also be a faulty O2 sensor causing you to run a little rich?

or...maybe your cats are bad.

Take them for a ride so you can confirm the smell is occurring and say "there it is, do you smell it now?"

They never disputed that fact that the smell was occurring, just that it was due to the cats.

Go to a different dealer.

Beaverton Infiniti is the only dealer within 100 miles of me. :frown:

It does offer diesel. I suppose that is a possibility. I found some info online about a class action lawsuit against Shell for high sulfur content in their gasoline...but it was from 2004. I couldn't find anything more recent.

The extended warranty is good (for me) until 2012 or another 26,000 miles so my tentative plan is to use Chevron for the next couple weeks and see what happens. The fact that my other car uses Shell and does not have this problem makes me pretty skeptical... If it persists I'm going back in to my dealer with a vengeance.
Thanks for the help guys!

do you use the same Shell every time? Maybe try using a different station, since you seem to prefer Shell. Either way, that just sounds like BS, but I wonder why they would turn you away.

fwiw, I had the cats replaced on my black FX under warranty at 65k miles or so with no questions asked. However, I had no sulfur smell, just a pesky CEL.

I usually use the same Shell station. My plan is to switch stations for a while and proceed from there.

I think they turned me away because they either A: get some kind of incentive for saving the company money, or B: do everything by the letter of the service manual without an ounce of common sense. Since I have no CEL, they just pulled a random explanation out of their a$$es and went on to the next vehicle. I don't believe them because I'm a logical person and the Shell/sulfur explanation doesn't make sense to me. That said, I don't know what the problem is either so I'm really trying to keep an open mind. The icing on the crap-cake is that they didn't take the time to drive it long enough to reproduce the problem but had time to measure the tread on my brand new tires. That's just stupid and it makes me skeptical of everything they do.

I've seen this sulfer smell many times in the past, usually either bad cats or a car not running right at all & killing the cats. don't see this recently with obdII cars really, I would expect the obdII system would pick something up really... cats go bad with cars not running right & the ecu should see anything that bad as a fault before it kills the cats... strange... I would't say it's imposible that it is something from the fuel I guess. does the car still pull as strong as it did? usually deteriorated cores in the cat causes significant flow restrictions & you can really feel the difference & even hear it sometimes if it's blocked enough

If there is a difference in performance, its been so gradual in the making that I haven't noticed. The exhaust sounds "flowmaster normal" and I did kick the ass of a WRX today 0-45mph so its definitely not THAT bad...

Maybe the smell is coming from your upper lip? Wash yo face, Tchuck!!!

Just kiddin. You have checked everything I would have guessed. Go smell the exhaust of another FX and see if it's the same?

Just an update: I have not used Shell gasoline for almost exactly two weeks now and my problem is GONE. I am absolutely shocked. +1 for my local dealership tech and for keeping an open mind. Good thing I didn't cause a scene when I was there like I wanted to.

I have never had a problem with Shell, weird

Nor had I prior to this. I think at best it's a quality control issue but I can't imagine it's isolated to my local station...? Who knows. Unfortunately for them I don't care what caused it. The problem is gone and I'm not going back.

EDIT: CHEVRON FTW!!!!
