Car Gouged Rear Bumper and Left it Parked that way

I parked my car across the street from my home yesterday since I having a baby shower at my house. This morning I went to get into my car and I see an old Volvo parked so close to my FX that I has to do a double take. After I visually confirmed that his car was physically touching my car I pulled forward to assess the damage and this is what I saw:

took a bunch of pictures of the damage, but this was the most telling. His front license plate had huge, protruding bolts and and they were firmly dug into my FX's bumper. And what's worse, he just left the car parked that way! Look at those bolts!

So I took a bunch of photos and I am about to call my insurance company. Is there anything special I should tell them? What kind of a balloon head would make contact with a car's bumper and then just leave it that way and walk away? Remember, I had to pull my car forward to even see the damage he caused because the bolts had firmly dug into my car.

Was it on a hill at all? Sometimes cars roll forward a bit before the parking pin catches. It's entirely possible he parked close without touching you, but then rolled forward into you and didn't even notice.

That's just the plastic part anyway. On an 8 year old car, I'm surprised you don't have more marks like that. I know I have a few.

No it wasn't on a hill at all. The person driving either miscalculated how close they were to my car or just have not cared.

Either way, I have about three noticable to me marks on my bumper thanks to this guy.

wow sorry to hear that i'm not sure about the insurance part but couldn't you wait until you saw the guy and
ask him for like fifty dollars? not to be funny but who would put such big bolts on license plate... damn sorry to
hear that.....
i would've kicked his door to give him a nice dent so he learns.... TT JK

that is a couple of hundred to fix if it goes bumper reconditioning. try to settle with the other party, then use insurance if it doesnt work. hope it works out for you.

that sucks. Will the insurance really grant a whole new bumper?

This is why I hate when states requires front license plates....pretty much defeats the purpose of the bumper. This would have been completely avoided.

dont call your insurance yet you have a deductible. Find him/her and ask them if they want to repair it without insurance involved, if no, get there insurance info and contact their insurance, dont contact yours. If they left you cant find them go to a police station and file a report, try to get there name info and address per license plate number. IF you tryed everything else and failed, Call your insurance company.. or pay out of ur pocket.

You people are awfully calm about this. If it were me, I'd have laid waste to the entire zip code if someone did that to my whip! People really do suck, don't they?

I hope you find a good resolution to your plight.

^ what i said was the most formal way you can approach to this problem. But i would literally sit on that volvo until the SOB arrives, then i would turn there world upside down, just the way i did with my gardeners, who scratched my fender.. :)

I'd hate to see what would happen if someone really did something bad to you then.

I just laughed again thinking about him seeing that a car bumped into him then fighting everyone in the zip code! Reminded me of the drunk guy here a couple years ago who said someone stole his 9-11 Foundation plate frame (It's a CHP thing, basically supposed to help you get out of tickets, that you get for donating to law enforcement), so he was going to do something to the first he car he found that also had one. :wink (2): One of my friends quickly pointed out his flawed logic.

To tell you the truth that's jut not a big enough deal to get insurance involved. If the guy doesn't pay up well... Suck it up. I know it sucks but like stu pointed out the car is 8yrs old and bound to have scratched. Btw that is not a gouged up bumper. This is when my mil backs into me:

Oh damn...you never posted that did you? that's a lot worse than I thought it would be......upgrade time baby, paint out the bumper do fogs, head lights etc. Never just replace. Man that pisses me off just seeing it.

Yup. Already ordered another one. Not much to upgrade though. HID fogs are in, headlights are blacked out, badge less grille. Maybe paint the plastic lower part of the bumper black too? Dunno how it'll look since the bumper will be black anyway.

TC6 I believe has black color matched lower plastics. Or at least something close. Somewhere in those thousands of pics there's probably one that would show it. :laugh.:

Doesn't she know she is NOT supposed to hit you AFTER all your cool stuff is done?

Always hate to read about these stupid and senseless bumps and bruises. I've noticed the Volvo plate bolts before and never liked them. Sadly, small damage like that is not worth reporting to insurance. Even with a small deductible, your rate will likely go up. They might not admit it, but they'll win.
The side of my truck got swiped by a passing mirror. Some things we just have to live with.
