what products do you guys use to clean your car?
i just bought a fx. got some scratches i want to get rid of and swirl marks
i want to do the full detailing myself from claybar to wax.
also need a product to clean the exhaust tips and the chrome trims

What color is your fx? Mine is black and I use the black kit by meguiars, looks great after. Also for wax Ive used the nxt generation tech wax which lasts longer than any wax ive ever used.

Scratches, id go with a clay bar but very light on the pressue. If you've never done clay bar grab some buffing compound and use it lightly. Always start out in a small spot to see the results. I know guys whom have spent 6 hours on their car and turned it into a swirly POS

Congrats on your purchase...I hope you were able to remove the swirls, scratches; did you use a Machine Polishes with with compounds like Megs105 and Megs 205...I have seen the results by others and its amazing.

I love the product Opti-Seal on clean paint..its sooo easy to apply, about 10 minutes per car and the look and protection is incredible. You can layer over it with Optimum Spray Wax to get a deeper, wetter look.

Good Luck and enjoy

I wouldn't say that waxing causes swirls. I'm sure it can, but it's not near as likely as washing or drying. Much easier to create swirls when washing because the sponge, mitt, towel can become dirty and it's easy to rub stuff into the paint. Same thing with drying, and it's easier to create swirl once the paint is dryer because there's no lubricity.

.
Agree with Stulax; waxing doesnt cause swirls; swirls are realted to incorrect washing, drying and surface prep.

I use Turtle Wax Ice Products-- Wash with Dawn first then clay bar and then I use the turtle Wax ICE Protedtant Sealant I like this product because it goes on clear and does not leave any white residue. It also works on all the plastics and rims as well and it's easy to buff off whole car only takes about an hour to do Then in between washes I use the ICE Detailer spray (also good on all surfaces) to keep her looking freshly washed and waxed .

Just a side note make sure that the FX is completely cleaned before using the Protectant sealer or you can seal the dirt in.

Best kept secret.
I use an acrylic paint conditioner. to keep my FX looking new.
I avoid all of the rubbing, buffing and stripping that goes with wax jobs.
Waxing a car is how swirls are made.

:eek.: Oh boy, here comes all the swirling around VaporWax. Try a Google search for some detailing forums and see what I mean.

I used to be a dawn person also, but I now know it's not good to use. It actually damages the paint because of the detergents and dries out the clear. Now if you're only doing it once or twice a year to completely clean of the paint, that's one thing, but probably best not to do it too often.

There a plenty of dedicated car shampoos that will work just as well, if not better.

To get rid of swirl marks you need to start off by investing in a nice orbit polisher.
Then do some research on the types of pads and how to use them effectively in order to achieve the type polishing you are looking for.

because you could most definitely create more swirl marks... or even burn the paint if you are using the wrong polisher and don't know what you are doing.

so I wouldn't focus too much on the products... but more on the equipment and knowledge of how to use it.

Orbit polishers should only be used by experienced pro's. You best choice is a DA (dual action).
Dual action polishers will improve the texture and luster of automotive paint with virtually no risk. They are the most user-friendly option for beginners and professionals, and they consistently produce beautiful results..

Meguires has an amazing DA MF system, check it out here http://www.autogeek.net/meguiars-dual-action-polisher-g110.html

good luck!

You're thinking of a rotary. Dual action and random orbital are basically the same thing.

Exactly. They are called dual action because they rotate and orbit at the same time which prevents a rookie from burning the paint. God no, I would never suggest a rotary to a beginner.

Probably one of the best products i've used in awhile and so far my favorite spray-on wax

Griot's Garage Spray on Wax

This spray on wax gives a pretty crazy shine, even better than some paste waxes i've tried. The best part though... is that you're supposed to apply the wax when the car is still a little wet. Combines the waxing/drying step into one :good:. Picked it up for $18+tax from advanced auto parts.
