Can't make up my mind for Motor Oil - HELP PLZ

I've always used Mobil 1 ep 5w-30, but recently went with M1 advanced fuel economy 0w-30, didn't see a difference, so I'm probably going back. Though I'm hearing really good things about royal purple and amzoil 5w-30. So I'm contemplating on going with one of those. Is anyone familiar with the two?

BTW Costco has on sale right now 3/1 gal of Chevron Delo 400 Motor Oil SAE 15W-40 for $35. Would that be an efficient motor oil for the FX35 in Winter?

here's an 03' G35 running on Delo 400 15w40:
at the website bobistheoilguy(DOT)com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=226879

All help is greatly appreciated
Thanks!

I understand that 5w-30 is probably the way to go, I'm just trying to decided which oil with additives is probably best without spending too much $$$. That's why I'm starting to lean on the Costco deal of the Chevron Delo 15w-40, I'm just not sure if that will work well in the VQ35 or could possibly be harmful?

I go to walmart and i get Penzoil Platinum jug and a Fram filter. Been doing it for 2 years no problem. Allot of guys use M1 but thats just a preference on really good oil. For the 15w40 i wouldn't go that route. It wont hurt but i like to stick to what the motor calls for.

If you'll be driving in the winter, do not go with a 15W-40 weight oil. It will not be as viscous at low temperatures compared to 5W and 0W oils.

What Oil is Best for You, a Comparison

I found this expination to be very informative guess I'll be sticking with MOBIL 1 (5w/30w)-------

What Oil is Best for You, a Comparison

The commercial shows oil being boiled in a saucepan over incredible heat and it still flows smoother than the "leading brand." Another one drains the oil out of an engine to show how protecting it is even when it isn't there. It's hype, like most mass-media advertising. They get your attention and then they sell you the product. You don't get to hear about viscosity indexes, flash and pour points, sulfated ash or zinc content, the six most important properties all motor oils available to the public. These properties are collectively referred to as "typical inspection data." The chart below compares, by weight, a variety of oils on the market today

·Viscosity Index: This is an empirical number indicating the rate of change in viscosity of an oil within a given temperature range. The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) assigns certain numbers to certain ratings based on a variety of testing procedures. Higher numbers indicate a low change, while lower numbers indicate a large change. The higher the number the better, as you bearings will be happy, but this is not an indication of how well the oil resists thermal breakdown.

·Flash Point: In degrees Fahrenheit, the flash point is the temperature at which an oil gives off vapors that can be ignited by a flame. The lower the flash point, the greater tendency for the oil to suffer vaporization loss at high temperatures and to burn off on hot cylinder walls and pistons. Flash point indicates quality of oil, and the higher the better.

·Pour point: Also measured in degrees Fahrenheit, the pour point is five degrees F above the point at which a chilled oil shows no movement at the surface for five seconds when inclined. This is especially important for oils used in winter climates, and the lower the better. In addition to a pour point, a borderline pumping temperature is given by some manufactures, which is a temperature at which the oil will still pump and maintain adequate pressure. This is roughly 20 degrees above the pour point.

·Sulfated Ash Content: The percent of sulfated ash is how much solid material is left over after the oil burns. A high ash content will form more deposits and sludge in the engine, while a low ash content promotes longer valve life.

·Zinc Content: Zinc is used in oils as an anti-wear additive, and will only be present in oils that are used when there is actual metal-to-metal contact in the engine. The zinc compounds react with the metal to prevent scuffing and wear. Under normal use, a level of 0.11 percent is sufficient enough to protect an engine for the entire oil-drain interval. Higher zinc content doesn't give you more or better protection, it gives you longer protection, but the downside is that a high zinc percentage can lead to deposit formations and plug fouling.

Too bad Pennzoil ULTRA is not up there....it's fairly new and is supposedly better than Mobil 1 and the awesome thing is that they sell it at wall mart for much much less than mobile 1. Mobil 1 is standard for BMWs, etc, Pennzoil ultra is standard for Ferrari.

If you get some could you post the SAE #'s for comparrison. And cost if you would Thanks

I just bought some more at wall mart yesterday. I plan to do the lab test results of it at some point. I have about 4,250 so far running on pennzoil ultra running with a mobil 1 extended life oil filter. I feel like I notice a big difference, but that could be all in my head from everything I've read. I'm thinking I'm going to check the oil at 5,000 to see how dirty it is and if it's not very dirty, I might go to 7,000 miles, then send it off to get the lab results to see if good time to replace or not after that kind of mileage.

I bought the Pennzoil ultra 5 quart for about $27.50.

From toyfx:
Check Pennzoil UOA on any forum. They are coming back incredible. Some of the UOA are after switching from Mobil 1 to Penn Ultra, and tehy got much better results with Penn Ultra.

Now speaking of Euro oils, they can not really be compared with American oils. But here is the list for Penn vs Mobil 1 for approved uses (new life or extended performance is their top tier oil now)

I did a uoa for castrol gtx on my vq35de and at 3750 it was amazing according to Blackstone. They gave me a green light to push it to 6k. I haven't done it tho. Mainly no sales on gtx. I'm running Napa syn now and then two cases of castrol edge.

I go with what's on sale, I got the case of 6qt of edge for $20 after rebate. If u want to push it to 10-20k intervals then u should do some homework. But for 5k-8k range any big name syn oil will do the job.

What's everyone's take on Amsoil here? I know its very good oil, lots of good ratings and the chart shows good numbers. I plan on switching over to Amsoil at my next change, running it for about 7500 miles intervals. Just looking for everyone's candid responses about Amsoil Syn.

UGGGHHH Penzoil! Say hello to the sludge for me :)

I run Amsoil in EVERYTHING, my drag car, daily driver, truck. ATV.

I have sent around 30 tests to blackstone testing between Amsoil and Mobil one. The difference is night and day, the Mobil starts to brake down around 3000 miles. I'm going onto 18,000 miles on a oil change with amsoil, sent a test. And they said its testing like new oil.

Nice, this is the kind of stuff I like to hear, but 18K is quite a bit between intervals. I know they make like a 15K and a 25K intervals oil, but I don't plan on going even more than 10K. I figure I'll change my oil twice a year even though I don't drive that much. Are you an Amsoil dealer too?

KK...Sludge? Such a thing of the past. Pennzoil is far past that stigma.

Penn Ultra is the premier oil right now. It has more detergents in it to really clean up your engine. I've run the 2 previous oil changes with it and it really ran good. I run it with the Bosch DD+ oil filter. Bosch DD+ FILTERS last 15,000 miles, so I change it every other oil change.

Currently I'm running Penn Platinum with the Bosch DD+. Ultra is really overkill for our engines, almost everyone agrees Plat is plenty of protection. I just used the Ultra to clean for 2 oil changes for the extra cleaning. And since using Penn.. I'm getting 10+ mpg more!

Walmart has Penn Ultra for $27 for the 5qrt jug. (Not all walmarts are apparently carrying it)
Penn Plat is $24 5qrt jug
Bosch DD+ oil filters for $11

Ok j/k about the mpg.....but seeing if anyone paid attention...:tongue (2):

When I first read it on Amsoil's label I was like WHAT! I use to be a die hard 3000 - 3500 oil change guy. So going this long was a big change, but that is why I have been taking samples and sending them off to check the oil status.

Now the oil filter I use is a Amsoil EA Filter, and I changed that at 8,000 miles.

Every one says well Amsoil is SO spendy, well take the cost of Mobil one, god for bid Penzoil, or anything other off the self oil, and if your changing that ever 5-8K miles, your spending ALLOT more and not getting the protection.

I'm also a dealer for amsoil, its the only oil I will trust, and sell.

But this is just my .02 cents ;) Every one has there outlook, I'm just saying what I have done.

Amsoil is a ripoff and hard to get and only select dealers sell them so they praise them.

I'll be putting up a report of Pennzoil ultra soon. I'm amazed at the results so far, it's readily available and much much much cheaper.

Andrew, have you done lab tests on your oil? You should post on the blackstone labs thread your results so you can keep track.

Koso- post your blackstone labs results as well. Would be nice for members to see your amsoil results with proven statistics.

I haven't done the tests yet. It's better to get few oil changes with the same oil before sending it in. Gives you a true idea what that oil is doing. I'll be sending this oil change in to do a b stone labs test. I've been running 6000 mile intervals for the last 3 oc. 2 ultra and now 1 Plat.

One thing I'm hesitant about is, I think my car.is running great right now. Now what if after the analysis they say my engines Crap. Good to find out ahead of time, but something I really don't want to know....lol.

Only issue is price and getting amsoil. There is a warehouse near Glendale heights. I got a source in shamburg as well. I think its about $10/ quart.

If I ran amsoil, it would be a yearly oil change. But a oil change isnt a hassle for me so I have no benefit from it. An oil change for me is a reason to do safety inspection on the under body of my car. I like to look thru it least twice a year. For worn stuff or broken boots.

I haven't done tests on my own oil, I'm not that hardcore about it....yet. I've been using Mobil 1 for years and I don't think its bad oil at all. Yes, Amsoil is very expensive but I change my oil twice a year, so I can deal with the cost for the piece of mind. I'm just willing to pay more for oil that's "better".
