Best wheel locks

What do you guys think?? I'm picking up my FX tomorrow (finally), my cousin just got his new g37sport last week and already has his rims jacked. Friggin sucks, I'm paranoid now, I had my M for 2 years and didn't think twice about it. But I want a couple sets of wheel locks on my FX...so what do you guys recommend?

mcguard are always great locks, I'm gonna do mcguard spline drive lugs & 2 sets of mcguard wheel locks. that'd slow them down enough to hopefully move on to another target instead

never heard of them but haven't looked anywhere else than mcguard really myself either.

the biggest thing to worry about with locks is not only if the thief has a hard time with them, but also that you don't. after hammering them off & on long term by mechanics with airguns, broken/stripped keys & lost keys are the 2 major problems they would normally ever give you a problem with wheel locks. mcguard is great in both areas, will help you replace keys in the future should the need arise & they use good keys that last in service well.

I was looking myself, but I needed something practical as to why I would go with McGard...customer service...sold.

what would be the mcgard wheel locks to use on a FX. When i purchased my rims they gave me some spline wheel locks but they seem to generic. I just want to buy a set that not everyone will have a key to like it is when they give you some from a stupid store.

depends on the lugs you have, as to what kind of collar you'll need on the key. Are the lugs exposed, or sunk in?
Mcgard is not a bad lock. Not the prettiest I agree

the lugs are not exposed they basically are flushed with the lexani lss-10 rims. however when i purchased them the kid that installed them told me that the wheel locks were the same for every single car when they install the rims there.

I just got a set of Rays Duraluminum lugs and locks. I'm thinking of getting McGard's locks only, so I have two locks per wheel. Do you know the weight of the lugs, Ed? The Rays are super light, weighing in at 0.19 oz per lug.

Umm, Rays weight is 0.9 oz, not 0.19 oz. I bet the McGard will be around 1.4 oz like my current spline lugs.

Now why would I know something like that??

Just kidding. I was shocked that the tuner lock weighs less, even though it's bigger. You need the Tuner lock, but just listed the rest for you.

Cone Seat Tuner Lock; Key Hex 13/16" 25254 = .7750 oz

Cone Seat Lock 24154 = 1.0083 oz

McGard locks are awesome, very solid.

I think I read that JBaker said the Ray's are "soft", but never paid attention b/c I don't have Rays.

ALWAYS hand remove/install, no impact tools to make these last the longest and avoid over torquing.

Ya know Ray's lugs and locks are overkill right -- rotating mass that close to the center, difference is small=) But then again you went all out on your wheels so might as well!

Okay, if that's true, my numbers make no sense.

Maybe there is a "1" in front of all of them?

1.7750 oz
1.0083 oz
1.3625 oz

That would make more sense. I know the last 4 digits are 100% right though =)

Yes, spline is a sort of a lock -- universal key though. So instead of a socket, you need a special socket that anyone can buy.

A wheel lock, there is only one key.

Spline will slow down a wheel thief, if they don't have a spline key. A wheel lock will slow them down even further.

But I had a wheel installer use a impact gun when I told him not to, and cross threaded the stud with the key. I forgot what he did, but he used the impact gun the break off the nut entirely, with part of the stud in it:mad.:

That equated to me driving with 1 less stud to the closest autozone to get a new stud to install.

So basically, it'll slow down a thief, but if they are determined, they'll get your wheels =(

Ya, Andrew is right, my Rays are 0.9 oz, sorry. They feel like pebbles, lol. I'm going to place an order those McGard's right now. Two wheel locks per wheel for my piece of mind. Wow, the 25254 is only 0.77 or 1.77? 0.77 is really light!

Yeah, they have to be 1.77, they are heavy. The person I talked to when I got those numbers must have not said the 1 or I just misheard.

The last time I had a flat repaired my tire guy hammered an over-sized socket onto my splined wheel lock and removed it just like a normal socket with his impact gun. (I left my key in my toolbox at home) I was shocked. If I worried at all about wheel theft, I would upgrade to the internal key style lock, but I think the over-sized socket trick would probably still work... Fwiw, my Audi came stock with the internal key style, like this:

I think the ideal wheel lock would be like the one in the above picture, but uber-hard to prevent a socket from digging into the outside. An aluminum lock would be a piece of cake for a hammer and a large impact socket, regardless of the external profile.
