Just looking for some new options. This past weekend I installed the RevShift motor mounts and there is WAY too much vibration at idle. I do like the change in feel during acceleration and off the line - can feel an improvement. But the vibration while at a stop is just too much in keeping with the luxury feel. Guys more into the street performance or track feel might want to consider this mod.

I'm really looking for something between a full out race motor mount and the OEM style. I'd looking to compromise between less drivetrain loss, but also less vibration. Anybody have experience or suggestions?

If you can find anything it would be great...

with the torque I produce and driving my bay like it's stolen.. I have broken the engine mounts 2 times..

Going on the third set now..

Not cheap either..

only reason to upgrade the motor mounts is if your making enough power to break the oe's. the engine mounts are isolators.

when your making enough power to rip the stock mounts then either solid mounts (suck on a street car) or what I would prefer is a limit strap. you will feel the vibration tranfer still, but only under a heavy load when the limit strap is under tension... we even used to use chains back in the day... the right one will still crush after a while but should last a while

Interesting - never heard of a limit strap. Is this a product available for the FX or is it a DIY thing?

So you would use a limit strap in addition to the OEM mounts?

yeah, limit the amount the left side of the engine can raise, so the mount alone is not the only opposing force... majority are home made but I belive places like summit & stuff sell ready fabricated fancy ones, but every aplication will require different mounting points & lengths... I've seen high tension wire used, nylon straps, like I said chains, I've also seen solid ones with hiem joints but that kinda defeats the purpose cause it'll transfer vibration all the time...

making/ changing the engine mount to a solid or stiffer one WILL make you FX shake and rattle like a ford pinto (w/ 200,000 miles)

*ok not shake , but you will feel more vibrations from the engine.

It's vibrating, not shaking - just want to clarify for anybody that might want to go for more race mods than me. I do like the performance feel part of it, but after driving the FX as quiet as it was since I bought it new in 04, I just can't get used to the sound. I'm going to have my chance though. It will probably be another six weeks before I swap it out for whatever else I find. I wouldn't mind trying an even softer mount first. If nothing is available, then I'll go back to OEM.

At idle, it's a louder vibration that you can hear along side music playing. Moving, I can feel a little more vibe, but not much more than OEM. The noise drops off almost entirely. If you read up on the mfg sites, the desription often reads, "increases driver connection with the car".

I can now tell you all from experience that urethane mounts do exactly that. Directly through the chassis to your ass and ears. Sometimes you just gotta try new things. Could have been a much more expensive mistake, you know?

Well jumbo thanks for being the first to experiment! I think I will stick with oem if and when my mounts do break or crack.

Me too.

I guess after I go FI if I brake motor mounts often, I'll have to re-visit. But if they last a couple years, I'll just add it to my check/maintenance annual list.

Cool idea

Found a guy that makes his own motor mounts and it really doesn't seem that tough. It would be interesting to try with different materials. He uses Flexane, but I wonder about RTV or other silicone hybrids. Seems like I could chug out three or four different versions and try them out for very little money.

I'd be more meticulous about mine - would make sure the top and bottom surfaces are parallel and I'd trim it on a lathe to play with different profiles. I might also incorperate Turbo's idea of a limit strap to give myself a soft idle, but to grab as soon as there is any torque input through it.

I'm not familiar with the OEM mounts, but is it possible to fill them with urethane or use an insert of some kind? It would be a compromise between OEM and full replacement mounts. On a car like the FX, replacement urethane mounts would definitely change the feel of the car. The vibrations at idle can be annoying; it's weird feeling the steering wheel and shifter vibrate. With my previous car, I had to do it after realizing that under full throttle, the engine was moving so much it hit the strut tower bar.

Or on another note, do they make engine damper kits for FX's? I've seen them on a ton of other cars and supposedly they reduce the movement of the engine although I've never tried them. Should work like a limit strap.

Have you looked into a damper brace?

Actually yes - but it would be something used better with the OEM mounts. Right now I have solid poly mounts and a damper wouldn't do much good because the engine doesn't move with solid mounts.

I do plan to go back to OEM mounts, but I have no complaints about the feel of the ride on OEM mounts. I'd be willing to try a damper brace to improve OEM drivetrain performance, but probably after I go FI.

OEM mounts arrived. Looking forward to getting my engine isolation back! Getting more accustomed to the vibe and sound - but still want it gone. Here's the OEM mounts, from a dealership in Arizona at $138 a piece.

Pretty interesting - sort of a hybrid DIY. Might try out one of these the next time I rip my OEM mount - to see if the fix feels better than OEM does new. But that's going to be a ways off - these are new...
