21" FX50 Wheels - Need tire suggestions

My 21's arrive Thursday - putting them on Saturday. Trying to decide on tires.

Don't really want Bridgestones again - but there are very limited selections.

Also - can I go to 275/45-21 on this rim? I should as it's 9.5...and that gives me a little more to play with...

Did you try searching?

Here is the main thread where the rims are discussed a lot as well as pretty much every single (of the 3) tire choices for the car...

To summarize, from what I understood when I almost purchased a set of the 21's, was that the dunlops are the way to go.

But if you are going that route, you will most definitely need a different set of winter tires.

EDIT: Just realized you are in LA. So just buy the dunlops...

I did do a search but did not find my exact answer. I had Dunlops on my S60R and hated them. They were incredibly noisy. Altho - I'm sure they were a different Dunlop.

Thanks for the quick reply and link.

I went with 265/40/21 continental cross contacts. The lower profile tires make the wheels look much more aggressive (less OE) and the ride quality and performance on the FX is excellent.

$2700!?!!?? I think you overpaid a bit friend....

As for the tires, usually people stick to factory-ish sizing because if you make the tires too small the wheel setup doesn't fit the fender shape well and they end up looking undersized and a bit silly. even if slammed. (this is 20's and 21's)

2700 was the best deal I could find anywhere on a pristine set. I had all my wheels guys in LA looking as well as the dealer. So i had to pay what i had to pay. Considering i'll have the car for a long time and just put the Aero kit on it...well, it is what it is. I won't be slamming it. So was looking for a slightly wider tired - but there are so few options. I guess i'll be going for the Bridgestones as they are on special and out the door is only 1k for the set installed with TPMS.

I'm leaving my 20mm H&R spacers on - so interested what that will look like.

I hear you. spacers are a must to get the 21's close to flush on a 2nd gen. I 15mm spacers front/ 20mm spacers rear and it's basically flush w/ the center of the fender/wheel well. 20mm in front with the 21s may stick out a tiny bit. look thru my pics

I have 275/45-21 on mine now, Pirelli Verde Scorpions and love them so far. They were installed right before Christmas. Very quiet and with the slightly taller sidewall the ride quality is so much better. I did not think I would be able to tell the difference but it is very apparent. With all the snow we've had here they have handled extremely well on top of that.

I just installed a set of 295-40-21 Continental ContiSportContact 5's on Saturday. Same diameter as factory, but much wider. They leave about 3/8in clearance to the front steering upright & not close anywhere else. No rubbing at all. It looks pretty good with that much tire at all four corners.

Forgot to ask at the time of your post but can you post pics of your tires on the wheels? You must have some meaty rubber going on there!

Aside from the extra tire width, did you get any other issues with the tires considering they are wider than the dimensions of the OEM tires? I've purchased a set of Bridgetones for the OEM 21" rims on my FX, and they sucked balls.....I would say that the tires got worn out after 11 250 miles (I don't drive my truck very aggressively). I'm looking for a new set now, and considering the Dunlops, but it would be nice to have other options as well.

Thanks

As Logan asked could you please post a picture of your tires/rims for us to see the difference?

Thanks!

Don't hold your breath for a pic and an answer. Looks like he hardly comes here. He only has 1 post and last visited the site on May 1st.
I agree though, it would be nice to see a pic with those tires installed.

Sorry to bring this thread back alive. I am just wondering if anyone had anything else to add. Yes the 21 tire selection is horrible. I hear the Dunlops are not worth the extra $$ for the road noise and not that much better grip... That's just what I have heard. I was considering going up to the 295, but I am not sure how it will look or work out. It would help protect the rim since I let my wife drive sometimes and the stock 21 will get curb jobs on them for sure if your anywhere close :) I already have some scuffs from my significant other. Diameter is stock so no changes on speedo or anything. I was also considering adding a spacer if I keep the stock 265 set up to fill out the wells a little more.

I too have installed a set of 295-40-21 Continental ContiSportContact on all four corners on my FX50s, and its definately the way to go.
I'll upload some pictures later on.

I had aftermarket 22's before, and i returned to stock because the drive was horrible and felt very heavy. The OEM 21's are the way to go and with the extra meat, the ride is much more grippy.
