1st generation fx exhaust on 2011 fx35

Hey guys, today I installed the mid pipe and muffler from a first gen fx on my 2011. It a full bolt on install. Did it myself. I have no real car modding experience so if I can do it, anyone can. Almost everything fits perfectly part mymensingh mid pipe touches something under it. I'm not sure if my original mid pipe was the same. I'm not really car savvy so I have no idea if it's ok or what the mid pipe is actually touching.
The exhaust I got has a decent amount of rusting so that worries me a but. Only other issue is the first gen muffler has two hangers on the opposite side of the second gens. Not really a big deal. I think I will just have a muffler shop weld another hanger on. I know you guyS want pics and vids so I will attach.

P.S. someone tell me what part of the car the mid pipe is touching and if it's ok.

dont think anyone I heard made this attempt. best for you to take it to a shop with a lift and get a better an overview of what needs to be tweaked.

vid sounds good, deeper tone.

One question is the mid pipe the actual part that gives the 1st gen it's sound or is it the actual muffler?

I'm curious cause I'm wanting to fit a G37 coupe exhaust on and not sure if I need the mid pipe or just the muffler?????

By the way in your video it doesn't even sound any different than with the 1st gen exhaust on in your video.

Sounds the same as my 2nd gen exhaust. Here's my video:

Don't know if it's just me but they sound almost identical. :nerd (2):

I actually have a g37 midpipe that I chopped to fit my old G35x, so i can upload a pic of both resonators this weekend to show you the difference in resonator sizes. They play a big part in the volume. I would guess that the g37 muffler is smaller also, but I'm not sure.

It does sound similar in the videos, but when I hear a g35/ 350z/ or 1st gen fx pass, I think it sounds much better and louder than g37/ 370z/ or 2nd gen fx. Maybe it was just me?? or Maybe My exhaust isn't broken in yet?

Found this pic of someone else's install.

Basically, my midpipe is touching down on that. I assume that's not suppose to happen? Maybe someone could enlighten me on what that is/does?

If this is a quick and easy mod for a deeper tone, then nice work! Hopefully people will chime in and help you with the fitment issue.

Wow, I like the pioneer spirit in you. Was the bracket right after the resonator got hanged onto a hanger? If not you might want to get a bracket welded onto the pipe where it can utilize the hanger on your car should lift the pipe off the cross member.

THANKS! Thats my thought also, I actually going to bring it to muffler shop today to try to get that done.

Report back when you can. This will definitely open up more exhaust options for the 2nd Gen. Good job man!

I just got back from shop. Here is a pic from under the car. It is actually NOT touching the metal piece under it. Kinda hard to see from pic. The mechanic told me it was fine and there was nothing to worry about.

I think its great because there are tons of g35 coupe exhausts that sound great and are much less expensive than the ones made for the 2nd gen FX. Now we know it fits, it opens up so many opportunities.

Great job, so the mid pipe hangs on one hanger instead of two? How much of a gap between the pipe and cross member? Thanks for sharing. :top:

The first gen mid pipe only has 1 hanger, where as the second gen has 2. I think I am going to have another hanger added for extra support because there isn't any room for another hanger for the muffler. The first gen muffler has two hangers on the opposite side of the two hangers of the secon gen, which doesn't help me.
Theres about 1/4 to 1/3 of an inch......can't imagine that is enough room.

I researched this idea for a while and found no real answers so I took a chance and thankfully it worked. (BTW first gen guys, from what I gathered from myg37, the 2nd gen exhaust will fit your cars, but only if you swap out the sway bars.)

The top mid pipe belongs to a g37 coupe, the bottom is the original mid pipe is from my 11' FX35. If you want a different sound, I'm pretty sure you should buy the coupe muffler, because the resonators are identical in size.

Glad I found this thread. Makes me feel a little better about what I'm about to do. I've wanted the Invidia exhaust for a while, but kept hearing about drone. So I've been wanting to add a resonator to it, but didn't want to buy a $900 exhaust and then cut it up. So the stars aligned and I got the rear half of a 1st gen Invidia from one member. Then coincidentally, someone was selling the front section of a Gen2 Invidia. That means all I was missing was the X-pipe. It just so happens that a G guy was selling a resonated Magnaflow X-pipe (the one they all use to know out the drone/rasp from the HKS knockoff exhaust that's so popular). In about 2 weeks, I'm going to combine all 3 parts and see if it works out.

I had been doubting whether or not the front section would bolt up. I thought it would since people run HR exhaust manifolds, Y-pipes, and cats on the first gen G. But this gives me some assurance that it will work. Since you're saying the rear section is the only issue, I'm good.
