G35 new headliner and leaking moonroof beyond pissed!!

As some of you know I just did my suede headliner. But last night we had a heavy rain storm. It was pouring outside really bad. Today I came outside to put some parts back in and the headliner was soaked a little near the area where the A pillar meets with the headliner. I pulled the headliner down and there was a puddle of water laying on the back of the headliner where the drain tube connects to the tray.

Someone please help me out! I know Tchuck had this issue too.

Any idea what it could be or what to do? I'm so upset about this I worked so hard on that headliner and it got some water on it now. It was soaked about the size of my palm. Not too bad but just upsetting to me. Do you think the suede is ruined? People tell me suede can't get wet.

Is it real suede? Or just synthetic suede? I'm leaning toward synthetic because that's typically what's used in automotive applications. If it's the latter, it's fine. Just dry it out. Even on the tiny chance it's real suede, water won't ruin it.

It's synthetic suede so I guess it should be good then. Ughhh I'm so mad still cause I worked hard on this.

I disconnected the drain tube and used a can of compressed air and my mouth to blow through it. I poured water down the drain and it all came out the bottom as it should so i hope this fixes it. Anyway to test it out to make sure it doesn't leak again and to make sure that was the problem?

I know 1st gen's do, so it only makes sense that 2nd gen's do also, imo. Once I forgot the sunroof open in a popped up position when it was raining a bit but thankfully water didn't go in the FX.

Yeah our 2nd gen FX's have them too.

here is what the tube in my G35 looks like connected to the fitting on the tray that catches the water:

I'm still lost about this whole hose thing. If the sunroof is closed and it leaks I would think that there is another problem?

Fixed this stupid issue. The bolts that hold the tray up that catches the water were loose causing a gap that allowed water to get through. Tightened them up and sprayed it with a high pressure hose for a few minutes and no more leaking. Also used my compressor to clean the drain lines out they had mud in them! Hopefully this fixes the issue.

ill post some pictures.

All sunroofs leak no mater what. That's why there is 4 trays at each corner to catch the water and drain it via tubes routed through the car to the bottom. The glass never makes a perfect seal because its designed to open to they installed trays to catch the water that does seep through.

Ok the leaking moonroof I fixed since the tray was loose and the drain hoses were clogged all fixed.

But guess what I got another leak somewhere else now!!! The A pillar keeps getting wet and collecting water behind it in the middle. I had someone run water over the outside while I sit inside and check for leaks. I then find out upon closer inspection that the windshield was replaced before (probably got cracked by a rock) and wasn't sealed at the upper driverside seam very good. It was dripping water and running down into the A pillar. Instead of spending $130 to have the windshield taken out and reseated, I just went to Autozone and picked up a bottle of Permatex flow sealant for windshields. I'm currently waiting for the sealant to dry then I will retest for leaks.

Ughhh I'm so pissed about this its making me think of getting rid of it. I've been running into some issues with this car because it wasn't taken care of too well. I don't really want to be spending too much money on this car either. I'll just wait and see if this issue sorts out after the sealant dries.

Your FX should really be your daily driver. Any value lost by putting on the additional miles is surely outweighed by the cost to purchase and repair your G. Just my 2 cents. Regardless of that, I hope the sealant works to resolve the leaking.

I agree I'm seriously thinking about getting rid of it. I didn't mind putting money into a few mods on this, but if its going to keep costing me money on stupid stuff I don't want to spend then maybe it's a good idea.

So far problems that I've had:

1. Leaking Moonroof = Fixed
2. Leaking WIndshield = Still Working on it
3. Radiator fan not working = bought an aftermarket fan for $102 (on its way)
4. Car randomly has a hard time starting on warm starts = Camshaft sensor failure (still havent fixed yet)
5. Suspension creaking = Both front compression rod bushings cracked
6. Humming noise on highway = One of the wheel bearing are done for (not sure which one yet)
7. Pulleys making a grinding and squeaking noise = Fixed (Retightened them and noise went away)

Thats pretty much it for now. The car still rides and runs solid but I really don't want to put anymore money in this car. All that stuff above I'm sure is going to cost me close to $1K for fixing. Most of the stuff I've done myself. If this car seriously has another problem I might just trade it for a used M or G37.

As the others said, maybe get rid of the G. I know you have enjoyed doing mods on it and it is a good learning tool, but all these roadblocks can be so frustrating.
You have a beautiful FX, better to drive it and enjoy it..

I've only had problems 4,5,6,7 and fixed them all pretty cheap. Crank sensor was cake to do. I deleted the failing idler pulley for $2. The rods bushings are cracked but not needing replacement and did both front wheel bearings.

To me all these items are common replacement items of a car in the 80k range. Sunroofs being clogged are more prone to cars being parked outside compared to garage queens. Little twigs and etc get clogged in the drains.

Only other problems would be failed window motors. Or radio giving out. :D
