Hey everyone I'm thinking about changing my brakes for the first time and wasn't sure if there was any tips or tricks or important things to do while doing the brake change. Shops use torque guns would that be a better way to go or just hand tight with a wrench and a bar good enough? Thanks ahead of time. I see a lot of people buying the akebono brake pads. Any better then hawks?

No real tricks to it man. It's very easy it took me only 30 minutes to do both. You don't need an impact gun just a torque wench. Remove the wheel. Then remove the two bolts on the back of the caliper. Lift the cover off and replace the pads that easy. Just remember to use good jack stands and you may need a breaker bar to loosen bolts.

Also use a torque wrench to tighten the caliper bolts back on to 46 ft pounds.

Suggestions on a good torque wrench? Ive seen so many options and mixed reviews not really sure which to get. Drive size matter?

I gotta go out tomorrow and buy the sockets for the caliper to loosen them. Does anyone know what size it is for that and if theres a recommend torque.

Yeah was gonna pick that up too. Is there a recommend size? like 4 inches or something. Any idea on the socket wrench size for the calipers

the bigger the better dont get the smaller ones. On my 1st gen its a 14mm, just a get a set of 10mm-21mm 6 point sockets

Been thinking about changing the brakes myself also. So you didn't have to bleed the brake lines at all?

when you change your brakes you don't have to bleed the brake lines if you don't want but many people do since they are doing brakes anyway.

theres also like a small clip thing on top of the brake. Make sure to kinda inspect it before taking it off. I just took the brake off and i noticed a hanging metal piece and was like wait what is this...

I quick question since we are on the brake topic here. I just did my rear brake pads today. Bought oem pads from local dealer who matched the online price for $54+tax (of course lol).
Anyways, when I installed the new brake pads I noticed that the metal clip attached to the top of the inner brake pads on one of the new pads was missing. Had no issue installing the pads and everything feels fine. What does that metal clip do? and is it a necessary component?

are you talking about the pad wear indicator? the little tab

oh that reminds me, is it normal for my brake pads to screech even tho theres a lot of padding left on the oem pads. I took the wheels off thinking i needed to change the brakes but nope theres a good amount left.

also i found the link, im wondering if this is what ur referring to as the metal clip.

my guess: that metal clip is the brake pad shim. if all is good, then I wouldn't worry about it. link has more info http://auto.howstuffworks.com/auto-parts/brakes/brake-parts/brake-shims.htm
Hmm....not sure but it could be. Its a metal clip that is basically riveted onto the back of the pad. But it doesn't actually clip onto anything.

It may be but not too sure. It sticks out on top of the inner pad.

After further research, I think you are right, it is the wear indicator.

Yes, it's similar to that but on the oem pad, the metal clip on on the back of the pad and not on top like in the picture.
