  • Infiniti models from the 2014 model year to carry Q or QX prefix
  • New nomenclature symbolizes new brand direction and the commitment to Infiniti under the leadership of Johan de Nysschen
  • The use of Q & QX captures the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, while relating back to Infiniti's roots of the Q45
  • New premium sports sedan to launch at the North American International Auto Show in January will be first Infiniti to carry new Q badge

HONG KONG - Marking another significant step in its plan to further expand its presence in the premium automotive sector, Infiniti today announced details of a new nomenclature strategy to be applied to its complete product range beginning with the 2014 model year. The first model to carry Infiniti's new Q badge will be the Q50, an all-new premium sports sedan to be unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013.

The premium automotive brand will see its model range simply prefixed either by Q; for sedans, coupes and convertibles, or QX, for crossover and SUV models. Each model will be further identified by a double digit representing hierarchy within the range.

This strategic change reflects Infiniti's desire for clarity and cohesiveness as it embarks on ambitious growth plans, including significant expansion of the Infiniti portfolio.

Commenting on the revised naming philosophy, Johan de Nysschen, President of Infiniti Motor Company Limited, said: "Over the past few months, we have talked at length with our retailers, our customers, and our business partners about our brand. The need for a new identity and direction to promote consumer familiarity with our model range as we expand the portfolio became evident. To achieve this, we clearly needed a simple and consistent nomenclature framework. After exhaustive research and evaluation, we concluded that 'Q' captured the inspiration within the next generation of Infiniti models, as well as emphasizing our performance credentials while harking back to our heritage with the Q45; Infiniti's first iconic flagship product in 1989."

Infiniti's new nomenclature strategy will be implemented in logical stages within the existing product range, as 2014 model year variants are introduced. The brand's future plans include a range of next-generation Infiniti models that will carry Q and QX badging from the outset.

Was just about to post this... not really a fan I think

How do you tell the difference between the QX70 engines, Im assuming they will still have the 3.7 and 5.0

I don't think the "class" is a good idea. I guess for people who want to feel they're better than others with the higher number or something?

I think the different models are more equal, but diverse for different purposes. I think QX(current) if you need a tank and a family vehicle. JX family vehicle that's not lame. FX - Sports car turned into SUV. EX - not sure if its a crossover or a tall sedan...

With new naming its going for the QX is the best and then FX then JX then EX.

I think it actually cheapens the line rather than enhance it.

Hmmmm...sounds much like Johan branding hyperbole. the only thing it does is to pull all the sub brand model letters under one "Q" umbrella but THAT would be too easy (and much less impressive) to say now wouldn't it =)

I feel like the X's in QX, FX, JX, AND EX makes it cohesive enough. They are completely different vehicles! It's gonna get real confusing when you're parked behind a 2012 QX56 and a 2014 QX70 at a stoplight...

Seriously, I don't see the need for the "Q collection". The question of "which one is that" will become even more confusing. Compare it to other brands who have smaller lines maybe but the Infiniti line up already appears to be too broad to gather everything up under one model badge.

No, it will have nothing to do with liter/engine size/displacement. It will most likely be along the lines like say: QX70 5.0, QX60 3.5, QX50 3.7, Q70 5.6 and so on. That's how you will be able to distinguish the various engine sizes on the exterior. Change is tough. I remember back in 1994, when Mercedes-Benz changed their nomenclature too, I was upset. Everything was like 560SEL or 500SL and they changed it to SL500 or E430, etc.

QX 70 really?!?!??! so wat a 7.0 liter engine ???

unless the 80 has a 8 liter, Its supposedly the class so signify which one is better, like bmw and mercedes I guess

I should add though, at least Mercedes did keep the segments separate, like C, E, S, etc. Having four SUVs with the QX prefix, will really confused buyers and the brand will some of its "image". I bet within a year or two Infiniti will change it back, lol.

So according to Infiniti, consumers see Q as a sign of luxury, so they're putting it across the entire brand. It's a horrible marketing move. It's like adding Sport to everything, it starts losing it's meaning when you apply it to everything. They are getting hammered on Facebook for this, so I hope they reconsider.

Random quotes from Infiniti...

Thank you for your comment. While you're right that we are paying homage to Infiniti's heritage, "Q" means so much more. In our research, consumers indicated strongly that “Q” carries connotations of “premium," “luxury” and “performance." It also means Infiniti has flexibility to overcome current naming restrictions as well as make our line-up clear and easy-to-understand. "Q" means a new dawn for Infiniti. Thank you again for your feedback!

Thank you for your comments. We appreciate a passionate Infiniti enthusiast! To confirm, model badging will appear on the top right and where appropriate, AWD will be badged on the lower left-hand side of the rear deck lid. Powertrain identification will be badged on the front fenders of each model, just behind the front wheels.

Thank you for your comment! Our new naming strategy is actually the result of extensive research and insights from many of our own consumers. The direction seeks to bring additional clarity and consistency as Infiniti embarks on ambitious growth plans. We're very excited about the possibilities this holds for the significant expansion of our product line we have planned. We believe "Q" pays homage to Infiniti's heritage, while truly signifying a new beginning. Join us live here on Facebook on January 14 to see the all new Infiniti Q50 for yourself.
