Staggered Giovanna Kilis & Toyo Proxes II...thoughts?

My OEM tires are just about shot, and after some research, I've pretty much decided that instead of getting another set of 21" tires, I'm going to get a set of Giovanna Kilis 22s with Toyo Proxes II tires.

I want to do a staggered set up, 22x9 with 265/45/22 for the front and 22x10.5 with 305/40/22 in the rear.

These tire sizes seem to be the best match for overall circumference, only out by 0.7% according to the Miata tire size calculator.

This setup would be 1.2" taller than the factory set up which I think will fill out the wheel wells nicely since lowering isn't an option at this point.

I believe the offset on the Giovannas is 40. I'm having a hard time verifying this online, but I'll confirm before placing my order.

The wheel offset calculator states 3mm LESS inner clearance and that they will EXTEND by 23mm for the rears, and 16mm MORE inner clearance and they'll EXTEND 4mm in the front.

I know bobby2478 has ordered 22x10.5s but he's going with 285s all around.

And I know that going staggered is not "recommended" with AWD but it's what I want to go with, and as someone mentioned in another thread, some of the guys here have crazy set ups. But if anyone has experience with staggered setups causing issues I'd definitely reconsider.

I think I've done enough research to go ahead with the order, but I just want to see if anyone has any suggestions, or input before I finalize anything.

My two cents...

1) Staggered = yes, do it. It looks cool and unless you are auto crossing and you pick the right tire sizes, you won't have AWD issues.

2) Not a fan of Toyo Proxes and Toyo Proxes II. Bad reviews on first version, mixed reviews on second version. Why risk it?? Go trued and tired Pirelli's.

Pirelli Scorpion Zero Asimmetrico 420 A A Z (All Seasons)
265/40/22 Front = 30.7" diameter, 10.7" wide, good for 9"-10.5" wheel width (buy it at tirerack and discounttire)
305/35/22 Rear = 30.6" diameter, 12.2" wide, good for 10"-12" wheel width (not on tire rack, only on discounttire)

The Proxes', you're running a .22" diameter difference vs the .1" difference in the Pirelli's.

I see what you mean on a taller tire and no lowering option (done right) for the moment, but the Toyo's itself are enough for me to say absolutely no

Use this instead:

Much better. Also, the Pirelli's are exact heights from the manufacturer.

It's a 6 mm difference in circumference between those two tires so the AWD will detect a 3 mm difference. I think the you will have problems with the AWD and i suggest you should stick to a 265/40R22|305/35R22 combo because the difference between those two is just 2 mm and you will be fine beeing close to the oem size. Plus i think those are too big for the FX wich has already some huge ass tires...

Wow, GREAT information. This should be a sticky if another party can also verify.

Thanks for sharing. .1" difference between 265/40/22 and 305/35/22 is 2.54 mm, so you are good to go!

AWD systems are designed to work with a small error (i don't know how much maybe 1% maybe 5%)... Think about uneven wear on the front or rear tires... The system has to work with that so a small error is acceptable. But with a 3 mm difference i think you are pushing it.

Had the proxes st II for almost a week through sunny and rainstorm days. So far, very good performance on both ends. Seems quiet enough also, my wife couldn't really tell the difference vs oem. Wheels are unidirectional. So far so good.

I've had the proxes st2's and loved them, some don't. I also had the first proxes and they were junk. Out of all the tires I had on my FX I would rank them:

  1. Continental Cross Contact UHP
  2. Proxes STII
  3. Whatever it came stock with
  4. Proxes S/T

Thanks for the info!

I was having a hell of a time finding tires, and the Proxes are the only ones I found that would work (using TireRack).

I'll check out prices and probably place an order within a day or two.

I'd like to second this info to be included in a sticky. Great information to know!

What are you doing with your 21's? Interested in Selling?

Thanks for the input everyone, looks like I wasn't too far off with my research. I'll be placing an order soon.

Can anyone recomend a place in Canada? Shipping from the US is going to be expensive...TireRack is quoting $115 shipping for the 2 Pirelli Fronts alone.

Planning on hanging on to the 21s for the winter, but I may need to sell them in order to afford the 22s lol...PM me an offer...

Keep the 21's, craigslist the OEM tires, and buy winter tires.

Based in Canada. You can get the 2 Pirelli's from them, then get the 2 Rear Pirelli's from Discounttire.=)

I ordered my wheels from Inland Wheel Center (www.inlandwheel.com), specifically I worked with Steve. They beat everyone else's price hands down on everything, so it would be worth asking what shipping to CA would be. Overall ordering process was smooth and he was very knowledgeable on what would/wouldn't work with my vehicle.

I've only had one minor issue, one of the wheels was damaged during shipping (not really their fault though), so I'm working with them to see what they'll do to fix the situation. I have no reason to suspect they won't take care of me however.

As far as using staggered setup on AWD, I don't have any direct experience so I can't provide factual evidence one way or the other. I've had several mechanics tell me you DON'T want to do different sizes when you have AWD, and that you want to stick with the same size all around. Not only to prevent issues with your vehicle, but also bear in mind if you do experience issues then Infiniti is unlikely to cover the repairs under warranty. You'd likely want to put the stock wheels back on before you ever go into the dealer, that way if there is a problem they won't suspect it could be because of something aftermarket in which they can and will say it isn't covered under warranty.

So to avoid all that potential hassle, I just went the same all around. Not to say that's the only way to go, but that's what I chose. I wanted piece of mind knowing I wouldn't be causing probs with my new vehicle, and if there were probs I wanted to be sure that they'd be covered under warranty.

Thanks Bobby, do you have Steve's contact information? I'll tell him you referred me.

If shipping is still expensive, and it likely will be, I think I've found a place about an hour away that can get me the wheels and tires.

I rarely have my vehicle into my Infiniti dealer because they're out of town, and they have become more and more difficult do deal with. But if I ever have issues, I'd put the 21s back on before taking it in.

Sure, not a problem. Since their company also makes spacers and remanufactures wheels, they have A LOT of knowledge about fittment of special setups on vehicles. Most places can only rely on a guide to tell them what will/won't fit. Steve can actually do the calculations to determine what will fit, and has installed some custom setups on FX's before as well so he has a frame of reference.

Tell him Rob Hangartner referred you :wink (2):

I got my 22x10.5 Lexani CVX-55's for $450/ea, everywhere else sells for around $600. Shipping for me was $200, but even with shipping they were STILL cheaper then Discount Tire. Another thing to consider is if you buy locally you have to pay sales tax, for me the tax + tire mounting fees at Discount Tire were about the same as shipping, so it was basically a wash (I even came out a few $ ahead even considering shipping costs).

Thanks Bobby, do you have Steve's contact information? I'll tell him you referred me.

Thanks for the info! I just emailed Steve, looking forward to what he has to say.

I see that they don't carry Giovanna Wheels, but the TSW Nurburgring appears to be a similar design. I'd probably go with it if we can work out a deal.

If you can, I'd give him a call as well. My understanding is they can get just about any wheel you want, you just need to ask what they can/can't get a hold of. Sometimes it's easier to figure things out over the phone, so if you have the time I'd suggest calling and explaining to him exactly what you're looking for and he should be able to help you out. I find it a lot easier then shooting emails back and forth, especially when you're first getting started.

Good Luck!

Well it's been quite a process trying to find someone who can get Giovanna wheels and is willing to ship them to Canada. Today I contacted Giovanna directly and it looks like they're going to build me a set of wheels and ship them to me.

Now I just need to get the tires!
