JWT Turbos RIP

I first installed turbos in 2007. They burned out 18 months later. SGP Racing did a poor job on the install.

When I got the replacement turbos installed at Uprev, it was suggested that I get larger fuel injectors. I did not take their advice.

18 months later and my second set of turbos are toast. It looks like larger fuel injecotrs would have saved me.

I'm going back to NA since the FX is paid for and I don't want a car payment any time soon.

Make sure you go to a very good shop if adding turbos.

OK this is going to sound like smack talking, but...

I have never seen a customers car come out of SGP running extremely well...it seems that only their personal vehicles run well...

Just something I have noticed, umm since the late 90s.

Best of luck to you bud, at least your motor didn't grenade itself.

Wait how does injectors have anything to do with turbos?

What were your AFRs, IDCs? Any knock?

What kind of turbos did you replace the original kit's turbos with or did you have them rebuilt? What caused failure?

Pretty generic terms for what ended up happening... I'm not terribly familiar with the JWT kit anymore because I was shopping for one years ago, but are they water cooled or just oil feed lines? Were they leaking any oil?

The only way injectors would have caused the problem is if you were running your injectors at 90-100% duty cycle and still a little lean (ie ran out of fuel) and the lean conditions caused really hot EGT to basically overheat the turbos... that or you ran out of fuel and the knock adding up eventually turned your pistons into grenades sending shrapnel through your turbine blades, but then you're dealing with a new motor, new heads, new turbos, and it didn't sound like it got THAT far... :embarrassed:

My thoughts exacly..... Lean condition would have shot your motor first not the turbo's. Maybe the turbo's weren't being oiled adequately....

I rebuilt them once.

I started my own business a year ago and did not look forward to rebuilding them a 2nd time.

I am going to miss FI.

The FX was burning a lot of oil.

I wish I had known more about SGP before I dropped a bunch of cash in their shop.

They are gone now, so no one else has to suffer from them.

There was oil leakage. I think the plenum spacer was not properly installed by SGP.

I am probably not technically savy enough to know what all happened.

Towards the end, there was significant white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I also noticed a strong burning plastic smell.

There was a strange high pitch whine coming from the turbos. That was the sound of the bearings going out again.

Sounds like oil feed issues with the turbos maybe? Still don't get why injectors were supposedly the root cause. If they truly were, then you were either consistently running lean and causing high EGTs that the turbos had to suffer through or consistently knocking causing the ECU to pull timing and as Viet stated, raised EGTs to rise.

The white smoke could be oil leaking through the turbos? How long would turbos last if you reversed the oil feed and oil return lines?

I know that whine loud and clear. Had the same happen to my Eclipse with decreasing levels of boost...

It's hard to go through this stuff time and time again. I did the same on my turbo Prelude, blew the motor on the T3/4, went 60-1 and the 3rd cylinder sleeve dropped and twisted, the machine shop (Patterson) repaired it, and it did it again. He closed up shop with my block inside, st00pid searched and found another one (fully done up) in Lousianna where I went and picked it up. We were in the middle of the T70 setup when I scrapped the build, put her back to "stock" (built motor waiting for FI, took the SpeedPro off and replaced with Hondata to get her to run), traded her in and bought myself an M coupe. It was one of the happiest and saddest days of my life lol.

Best of luck!!!!

The guys at Uprev did mention something about running too lean.

I just figure I tried twice and I'm not up for trying a third time.

Starting a business in this economy has been challenging although I am doing OK. I just don't want to invest a whole lot more in a car that is paid for right now.

lol I like that... you lined out the JWT Twin Turbo.

One more thing to line out there broseph, 398rwhp is kinda hard on a naturally aspirated FX35 :P
