Rear bumper bottom plastic trim?

For those of us familiar with paint, is the rear bumper bottom plastic trim (unpainted portion) finished with something?

My rear bumper was replaced about a year ago cuz some retard backed into my car at a market... The finish or whatever it is on the bumper is starting to peel off... It's been bugging me

Someone please put in their two cents... especially turbocad

Doubt I spilled anything there... I don't drive the thing -_-;

I think it's the body shop that finished the new bumper. It has to some sort of finishing layer that they put on to make it blacker or something

I need Turbocad to chime in since this is his expertise

it looks like they clearcoated the entire bumper and not just the painted portion...and it peeled off the plastic.

they resprayed the lower. that is not right if it was supposed to be brand new, the lower should be the natural black plastic finish, this is what makes it somewhat abraision resistant. technically the lower textured part is unrepairable for that reason, although some will try & repair it, the results your seeing is why it shouldn't be repaired really.

I can tell you that when I get these things new from infiniti sometimes the lower textured area is already scuffed up from handling in the dealers parts department & delivery, etc. I've had to return several when they come in scuffed up, it's possible they did put a new one but they resprayed the bottom because of a few blemishes from transit.

it can be hard to get a perfect bumper even when you do order a new one believe it or not, that's why it's impossible to get a good used bumper, it will be scuffed at least... the bodyshop should have refused it or returned it & ordered another, but then they would have delayed the job too... they probably made the call to just spray the bottom scuffed up area with bumper trim black or similar to just get it done & out... again, not right when you're paying for a brand new bumper which shouldn't be that way...

the other possibility of course is that they fixed your old bumper... if that's the case then there really screwed up...

Hmmm.. I think it makes sense now. I'm pretty sure it's a new bumper. My bumper was destroyed from that little incident so they had to use a lot of glue to make it look brand new.. I mean a lot of glue...

When I first got my car back from repairs, they didn't know where the cut off point was on the bumper so they painted too much of the bumper in silver. They must've spayed the whole thing when they corrected the paint issue.

It's life time warranty since I went through insurance so i am good. But I suppose it's better to remove the coating? It looks really clean under it and I think I can sort of scrape it off or have the shop strip it.

no way, i's done, can never be right again. just striping it will ruin the textured natural finish which is ruined anyway at this point. only thing that can be done short of replacing the bumper is to just respray the lower again. hate to say it but it was there screwup so they should replace it with a new one done the right way in the first place.

I think the color matched lowers looks great, especially in silver. You should complain until they do it for free.

Agreed! Although in all honesty you may have to chip in a little for the sides and front to be painted. But the rear should be paid for by them.

Either way...do it!!!! And post lots of pics! :tup:

This is just an idea, but you could probably put CF overlay on it to mask it depending on your preference. I would like to see someone with it on before I do it myself. When I purchased my FX it was already slight scuffed and I don't feel like replacing the entire bumper.
