  • When the temperature is below freezing, do not wash your car. The ice and snow will hold the salt in suspension and keep it from doing any major damage.
  • As soon as the temp climbs above freezing, take the car to a car wash that has an underbody spray. Be sure the car wash uses fresh and not recycled water, otherwise you're just having salt from other cars sprayed onto yours. If the temperature stays up, wash the car weekly.
What do people think about this?

+1

I used to take my car through a car wash to wash the salt off. But I'll leave the car wash alone now.

Can I bring my dogs too?

Why would you ever be washing your car below freezing anyway?

We get lots of snow up here but they don't use salt here only cinders. I wash mine during the winter whenever I get a sunny day during winter months. Can't stand a dirty ride I'm kinda anal that way.Every bug, tree sap, road tar enc... must be cleaned ASAP.
Even after a short drive I hit it with the trusty California duster and turtle wac ice detailer.Shine it MUST!

But is it below freezing when you do it? There's just something about being outside, with a hose, and spraying down your car when it's below freezing that doesn't seem like a good idea.

I have always washed my vehicles in below freezing weather and they never rusted away, it was the opposite, the bodies looked great. My cars are never kept in a garage either. Besides my FX I have 1997 GMC Z71 that is like new, not a bit of rust on it and I drive it a lot. I will not let my vehicle sit when it is covered in salt.
Oh and I do live in the Great White North.
