TPMS install and programming

So i finally got back from school and first things first is to get my car oil change/warranty work/ etc at my dealer (ray catena, nj)

So a couple months ago i swapped out my oem 18s for 20s. The 20s are tpms capable but they are not installed. I contacted ray catena and asked how much for labor to install the tpms and they quoted me almost $400 taxed. IMO, i'm thinking what a rip off. Now my parents are just like 'get it done at the dealer' but i'm determined to find a cheaper alternate. I was wondering if anyone from the NY area can recommend me a guy to install tpms for me, then maybe i can just take it to a dealer to have it programmed. Also is ~$400 to install and program TPMs average? or are they trying to high ball me

thankss

is that parts and labor? if so thats right and this is cheryl from metro infiniti

hi cheryl, thanks for the response. I wish i was in the west coast so i could just go to metro

the $400 is only for labor. I already have all the parts. If it was parts and labors i wouldnt mind but just labor seems kind of ehh to me

I think that's about right. If the sensors are still on the 18s... then you need to pay for labor about $20-30 per tire... then labor again for the 20s. Programming the sensors cost about $160-200 at the dealer.

Why so much? Takes no more than 15 minutes.
My dealer comp'd it for me, . . but that was just for programming. TPMS was already on the wheels

I think it's best to get them done at your local nissan dealer.

Labor for removing the wheels/tires - installing the tmps sensors, rebalance and mount, finally for tpms reprogramming. I would think it's $200 entire labor (given the parts are already in place).

I got my distance level 3 tech cousin in Nissan to reprogram my tmps for free .

So lemme understand this -

Are the TPMS already mounted? Or are they Unmounted? Are they new parts?

If they are mounted on the 18s currently - they would have to unmount the tires off the 18s, take the sensors off, unmount the tires off the 20's put the sensors on then mount the tires back on and program if needed. But if they were already sync'd with the fx then the programming isnt needed. dont forget they need to balance the tires too.....

sorry i wasn't more clear - ill try to explain again

-Sensors are not mounted on either the 18s or the 20s. They are uninstalled, sitting in a box (maybe they'll charge me labor for taking them out of the box )
-The 20s dont have TPMS installed right now, which is what i need done + programming

------------

I might just end up taking it to do the tpms at a nissan dealer mentioned above, or maybe just PM kenny and get a quote from infiniti of massq. first , dang should have thought about that earlier

Got it - so they would unmount the tires off the 20s install sensors, mount balance tires, sync'd tpms with car.

In that case $400 is WAY too much. You can get the tires mounted and balanced (while having the TPMS installed) for approximately $25-$30 per tire. If these are the original TPMS from your FX and you never had another set programmed then they will be recognized without needing a trip to the dealer.

Go to a tire shop you trust. If the tires are already mounted on the 20's, it's a simple task to break the bead on the outside of the rim, remove the rubber valve stem and install the TPMS. The local shop that I use charged me $5 a wheel to remove TPMS sensors from OEM wheels, install rubber valve stems, and rebalance and mount the tires. They probably gave me a good deal because I've been going there a while, but it shouldn't cost much anywhere you go.

It's possible to program these ourselfs with a handy tool like this one

just bought a schrader tpms programming tool myself, the 21211, says it works on all sensors...

this is the unit, didn't buy it here though & didn't pay anywhere near this much:

http://shop.oreillyauto.com/ProductDetail.aspx?MfrCode=SBP&MfrPartNumber=21211&CategoryCode=3642

but now, in doing a bit more research, I think this may not even work on the infiniti's... think it might need a different unit that is like $2,500

I'm hoping that the tool I bought may be able to be used in conjunction with like a snap-on scanner or an otc scanner or something, which i may have access too, otherwise back to square one... I really would love to be able to come up with a relatively affordable way to self program the tpms, but it just may not be practical... hopefully I'll have it by the end of the week & see if it does work on the fx...

has anyone found any tpms reprogrammer that works on the infiniti's that's not thousands of $$$ ?

that first one you shown or the bartec 400 can do it, but your talking like $1,500 & up for any tpms reset tool that does it through the obdII port which we need. actually that one for ~$1,500 is the cheapest one I've seen so far. the second one you showed is not goint to work at all with the fx.

the tool I winded buying does not work to put the fx in learn mode so it doesn't do it, although it does interact with the sensors to read there id & battery life...

Newbie here reading about every thread possible.

What would happen if you install rims without the TPMS?

your tpms system just won't work & you'll have a warning light pop up on your dash
