There's a thread over on Evom.net that has a stock Evo X gaining 108 whp with only bolt ons and NO tune. The shop has dyno's and pics to back it up too. I had to read it a couple of times to make sure I was reading it correctly.

Stock dyno: 252whp / 274 Torque

Add just an intake, catback, downpipe, test pipe, intercooler and a boost controller =

Mods dyno: 360whp / 330 Torque

That's just crazy responsive. Imagine what it would post with a simple tune. I love the VQ but I have to admit you can't beat those small turbo motors for sheer aftermarket performance and bang for your buck fun.

Impressive.

Same probably goes with STI's. There is a shop in Westchester a few of us FX'ers in NY went to a while back for a dyno session. Owner's son Rob claimed he was able to get some crazy #'s from a bone stock STI with only $ 1,100.00 worth upgrades.

There's half of that 108 hp.. When it's turbo, boost it up..

I've been liking the EVO X more and more... I can't believe the extreme some go to for the sake of weight

If I get an EVO X, I have quite a vast amount of resources at my fingertips... *drool* (btw, that's an EVO X)

Yep. My STi put down just over 310 whp with just a Cobb AP, TBE and intake.

I think it was set at 22psi with a spike of 24psi.

So are you thinking of buying one? When? I have to admit I'm curious myself. It would be a fun project car. I still have time to pull out of my Audi deal...

Well I don't know yet... I'm getting out of the Navy soon and I have to get my life in order first (school, house, job)

But with AMS in my back yard and 2 brothers who both work there... you can imagine how much money I'd blow there :P

AMS is an awesome shop (not just biased opinion, either). They have the world's fastest EVO (something ridiculous like 1106 awhp out of 2.3L, runs the 1/4 in 8.56 @ 171mph?) and some of the fastest track EVO's (I think an VIII and their new X).

They specialize in Soobies and EVOs, but also have a ton of SRT-4 customers, 240SX and DSMs.

Just recently, a customer in NY ordered an EVO X from some Mitsubishi dealership in like Schaumburg with about 30 miles, and instead of picking it up, had them deliver it straight to AMS for weight reduction and some insane motor work. I think that's unreal

They don't do our motors (350Z's and the like), but I'm gonna have them tune mine anyways. They've seen plenty of UTECs, so tuning that won't be a problem.

Oh and their new place (well it's going on a few years now I think?) is amazing compared to the old one, it's in West Chicago.

Look at one of their sweet shop cars:

Ok, I know the place you are on about know. That is one sick Evo. Maybe an Evo X should be my next stop...

Just priced one out. 09 GSR with the manual 5MT. Only option is the sight and sound pkg. MSRP = 35685. I think I can get one for around 31-32K OTD.

DO IT.

Btw, the 5spd trannies are very, very strong. The 6spd was having issues, it was usually the first thing to go (aka weakest link in the drivetrain).

I was kinda ehhhh about 5spd but for what I'd have intended for one if I were to get one, that doesn't matter one bit. I'd be perfectly happy with a supercharged FX as my DD, and that as my toy... wahoooo

Good to know about the 5spd. When I saw that they still hadn't upgraded to a six I was somewhat hesitant and thought it was a bit lame.

We'll see. It would save me a lot of money over the Audi. And I seem to be 2nd guessing myself a lot over this one. The Audi is a great car but I'm sort of missing having a true project car since my Cayman is pretty much complete. I need to make a decision quick though because I don't have much time. I'm off to the Mitsu dealer today.

Did you end up goin to the dealer? I'm really lookin into this. I've been reading a lot on evom.net. Turns out the 6spd's 4th gear was crap I believe...

The one thing that's really holding me back is the 2009 EVO X... it doesn't exist  I'm just wondering where Mitsubishi is going with that. If it's a revised 6spd, I'll wait... hopefully I can get a brand new one around 29k if I time it right... that or maybe pull off a Mitsubishi VIP discount.

Looks to be a slight bump in power (probably due to crap factory tune in the '08 models were very rich, there were at least 2 newer ECU flashes from the dealer available upon request if it looked like it wasn't done already) and some interior refinement, including a new Premium trim line with leather Recaro seats instead of the cloth ones that seem to be shedding staples in some '08s.

The 2010 Evo X is coming out in the summer. I think I'll be in the market for a 2008 Evo X around that time frame

Evo X road test

Yes. Test drove a GSR MT. Here's my thoughts.

Appearance:
Car was a lot bigger and bulkier in the flesh than I had thought. I like the overall exterior design though, more so than the IX which is one of my favorite cars. Mitsu did a good job of creating something new yet still evolving the brands design. It looks more mature and refined yet still keeping that aggressive Evo look to it. I would probably remove the large rear wing and replace it with a lip spoiler though. Overall I like it a lot.

Interior:
Better than the IX but still shit. I don't really care about this though. The Recaro seats were very nice and lateral support was excellent. Decent amount of room for 4 adults comfortably. Simple and functional layout.

Driving impressions:
Started her out pretty easy. The MT is a little notchy and imprecise. Throws a little longer than I would like. Think WRX. Nothing a sts kit won't fix. Clutch was decently sprung, maybe a little on the light side for me. Again no big deal.

After warming her up I opened her up a little. I was warned by some that I would be somewhat "underwhelmed" by the acceleration of the stock Evo before I went to test drive it, and those people were right. It was certainly quick. My butt dyno put it around where the reviews had it as a low 5s car. But compared to the Evo IX or my former 05 STi it felt slower over the sprint. Felt about as quick as a HR 350Z. Now some of this "feeling" may be explained by the more refined and quieter chassis and cabin. The car is certainly far less raw than the IX. You certainly don't get that raw and brutal sense of speed like you do in the IX or STi.

The Brembo's were excellent as can be expected. They brought the car down from speed with no fuss, wandering and little dive. The pedal feel was good and the travel about average. All in all, excellent brakes.

Now the really good stuff. Well the Evo X has been getting extremely positive reviews about its handling more so than anything else. And I have to agree. It's amazing. The steering feel and feedback is as close to a Porsche as you are going to find from a Japanese performance car. It feels perfectly weighted and you can make small adjustments very easily. The feedback is stellar and you know what the car is doing at any given second on the road.

The chassis felt very rigid and the suspension was perfectly dialed in. Overall the car felt extremely well balanced and weight transfer was predictable. I threw the car into some pretty high speed corners and it held firm with little body roll. High speed lane changes were telepathic and the car went wherever I pointed it without hesitation. The ride was firm but well dampened and offered a decent every day driving experience. It wasn't harsh like my former 05 STi which would beat the crap out of my dodgy back.

It was sunny and dry hovering just around freezing when I drove it so I don't have much experience with the AWD system in inclement weather. However I hear it is great. On dry roads the AWD provided amazing amounts of grip. It was very hard to really unsettle the car. I managed to throw the rear end out a little on a couple of occasions but the AWD would quickly kick in and straighten me out with some help from the gas pedal. That's all I can say about this until I learn more about the system and have more seat time in the car. I didn't really play around with the settings much.

Overall I really liked it. Will I buy one? Maybe. Maybe not. I have to make a decision on the Audi by Feb 27th or I'm out $5K. Three things that are drawing me to it are 1) I think I want a new project car and this would be great 2) I think I want a 4 door 3) It's significantly cheaper than the S5 and would save me some coin.

Although the block is aluminum (forged sleeves), the potential is massive.

So what color are you getting?

Yeah the potential is huge. I wouldn't be building it into some 500-600hp+ monster. I would just love to have it as a reliable 400hp-ish well balanced all-rounder. That's my goal.

If I buy one it will be Wicked White for sure.

Question for you: Can AMS service the Evo for all my scheduled maintenance as I would normally receive from a mitsu dealer or do they just do custom tunes? I would rather one shop do everything for me. Plus the dealer won't hassle me about warranty BS.
