For those of you who want clear tails and don't already have them here's where you can order, and you can order the aluminum roof racks also.

What did the pre-06 FX tails look like?

There are three different sets. The red ones, the clear ones and the smoked ones. Clear and smoked are similar clear tails but smoked has a darker tint in the reverse lights I believe. It doesn't matter much with model year. My 06 had red tails when I bought it. Smoked/clear ones came with the sport package.

EG3, thanks for the info man. I appreciate it.

Any recommendations on where is the best place to buy the clear ones? I'm not going to pay $500 for them. I've found the smoked tails for $299 but not the clear tails.

As turbocad found out, the clear and smoked are actually the same part number. The variations in production has caused the differences. Some have very little to no tint and therefore look clear.

I've never heard of this "smoked" until now. Many confused clear with smoked. I don't believe there are any "smoked" factory FX lights.

I believe the outers are the same but the inners come in as "smoked" in one and clear in another.. Don't know which/when/why but there is a difference..

Yah, I see a difference in lighting. Indoor vs outdoor = huge difference in lighting. I had a set of clear tail lights from 2005 and then swapped to a set from a 2007/2008 recall... same color to me.

What I'm saying is... has anybody seen these lights un-altered side-by-side? Not pictures using 2 different cameras in different lighting...

I have seen side by side, some are darker than others, same with sport headlights & even grills to. some are so light that they almost look straight chrome & some are dark enough to be very noticabally dark, but these are just variations in the production of these as far as I can tell. there is only one part # for clear/sport lights, almost a matter of luck in which you get ...

im pretty sure there are 2 different kinds....because ive seen the dark chrome headlights and grill so those are probably the ones they call smoked to match

...or i have no idea what im talking about:rofl:

The option of these clear tails comes ONLY with the SAME option for the darker grill and headlights. (granted they came OEM, you can obviously get the sport tails on a non-sport FX and have lighter headlights w/ darker tails)

There are lighter headlights and there are darker headlights, same with grill. The tails are all designed to be the same, but as John pointed out, probably variations in production. As far as "smoked" goes, these still don't qualify no matter how dark they make the chrome.
